Expert Advice

Kal Tire's Industrial service experts can help you choose the right tire for your vehicle.

Generally, this involves a three-step process based on your vehicle.

1. First, you must choose between one of two categories:

• Solid Rubber Press-On Tires (metal band and pneumatic)
• Pneumatic Tires

Solid Rubber Press-On Tires come in two types:

• Solid rubber metal band press-on tires have a natural low rolling resistance so they are suitable for both battery and IC engined trucks. Formulated natural rubber compounds combines high resilience for good deflection with high cut resistance for long life. Precision-engineered full thickness steel bands give extra strength and performance.

Solid Rubber Press-On Tires come in two types:

• Press-on tires (cushion) have formulated rubber compounds that combine high resilience for good deflection with high cut resistance for long life. Precision-engineered full thickness steel bands give extra strength and performance.

• Pneumatic shaped solid press-on tires offers true value for money. Specifically formulated rubber compounds allow a tire to carry loads over longer distances without overheating. A highly resilient centre layer absorbs shocks and gives a "soft-ride" making the tire very driver friendly. These tires require little maintenance (air checks) and have no down time due to flats.

There are three main factors that affect press-on tire performance:

• Load and load frequency
• Number and frequency of trips (shifts)
• Length of run and travel speed

Additional conditions affecting performance include:

• Capacity and class of equipment
• Surface (yard) condition and turning area
• Type and weight of materials moved

2. Second, you must choose a tread type.

Tread types range from smooth to extra traction treads and are chosen on type of use.

Smooth Tread

• Recommended for dry, indoor applications
• Performs consistently under load
• Better dry surface traction for stops and starts than traction treads
• Resists dock plate snags and damage
• Recommended for steer applications

Traction Tread

• Recommended for general purpose drive applications
• Perfect for a wide range of conditions
• Universal lug
• Available in a range of popular sizes

3. Third, you have to choose the options (compounds) of the tire specific to the vehicle's use.

These compounds come in a wide variety and include: Universal, electric, non marking, polyurethane, reinforced tires and more.
