Minus Sizing

Minus sizing helps you optimize performance for our winter season.

Original Equipment tire and wheel sizes have become larger and wider for better looks and performance in the last few years. Unfortunately these new performance based packages are not ideal for winter driving. So if you're likely to drive your vehicle in the snow during winter, you'll want tires and wheels in sizes that help put the laws of physics on your side by "minus" sizing.

What is Minus Sizing

Minus sizing means using smaller diameter wheels with narrower, higher profile tires (but still maintaining your vehicles original equipment needs). By doing so, better deep snow traction is achieved, and can also result in great savings on Winter Tire & Wheel Packages. In addition, higher profile tire sizes feature taller sidewalls and smaller diameter wheels that resist damages associated with winter road hazards.

Benefits of Minus Sizing

• Cost Efficiency
• Deep snow Traction

Minus sizing packages can be created through our Web Store when you search by vehicle type. the cost of minus sized Winter Tire & Wheel Packages are usually lower than a package maintaining your vehicle's original equipment sizing.

Best way to minus size for winter

• Use the base model specifications for your vehicle.

This is often an easy way to select an appropriate minus size tire and wheel for your vehicle. For example, a 2010 Toyota Matrix Base would go from its original 205/55R16-sized tires in favor of the 195/65R15-sized winter tires and wheels from the Matrix base model. The small dimensional difference, will reduce your cost while increase the vehicle's winter performance.

• Traditional Minus Sizing

By using traditional Plus Sizing techniques in reverse, combining taller profile tires with smaller diameter wheels. For example, a 2011 Kia Forte Koupe would have an original 215/45HR17-sized tires in favor of a Minus One 205/55R16-size on 16" wheels (where the wheel diameter is 1" smaller and the tire's sidewalls are ¾" taller) or Minus Two 195/65R15-size on 15" wheels (where the wheel diameter is 2" smaller and the tire's sidewalls are 1" taller).

Plus Sizing

One of the easiest ways to improve the performance of your vehicle is with Plus Sizing wheels and tires.

Plus Sizing refers to tires that are wider and have a shorter sidewall. The result is a larger contact patch and a sporty look.

Drivers choose Plus Sizing to improve:

• Steering response
• Handling
• Cornering ability
• The look of your vehicle

What's "Inch Up"?

"Inch Up" is the process of mounting a lower aspect ratio tire and larger diameter wheel on your car. This creates a larger contact patch and a shorter sidewall.

Why "Inch Up"?

"Inch Up" to improve your vehicle's performance and appearance.

• Increased Steering Response
• Improved Dry Handling
• Enhanced Cornering Ability
• Aggressive Good Looks

How Can You "Inch Up"?

"Inch Up" with the experts in plus sizing.

• Innovative Technology
• Precision Fit
• Wide Size Selection
• Proven Performance

"Inch Up" may be done in several ways. The most popular are:

1. Plus Zero

This method utilizes the same wheel diameter as Original Equipment(OE), but incorporates a tire with a larger than OE section width and smaller than OE aspect ratio. For example, replacing an OE 175/70R14 tire (on a 5.5-inch wheel) with a 195/60R14 tire would be a proper Plus Zero fitment. Note that this may require a replacement wheel to maintain proper rim width for the new tire.

2. Plus One

This method utilizes a one-inch larger diameter wheel, in conjunction with a tire of a one-step lower aspect ratio. An example of an appropriate Plus One fitment is to replace an OE 175/70R13 tire (23-inch overall diameter) with a 185/60R14 tire (22.9-inch overall diameter). Note that this method always requires a replacement wheel.

3. Plus Two

This method utilizes a two-inch larger diameter wheel, in conjunction with a tire of a two-step lower aspect ratio. An example of an appropriate Plus Two fitment is to replace an OE 175/70R13 tire (23-inch overall diameter) with a 195/50R15 tire (22.8-inch overall diameter).

An independent research company recently conducted a test to determine the effect "Inch Up" has on handling. Included here is an abbreviated summary of the test results.

The vehicle used for this comparison was a 1989 Mazda RX-7 SE. The original equipment tire is a 185/70HR14, and is mounted on a 5.5-inch wide wheel. The test was conducted on a dry asphalt surface. As the results from the lateral acceleration and handling course indicate, each successive plus size led to a noticeable increase in handling performance.

Warning:

When changing to a non-OE tire size, always consult the load/inflation charts to determine proper inflation pressure to maintain OE load-carrying capacity. Talk to your local Kal Tire store about your Plus Sizing options.

Wheel Care & Maintenance

Custom Wheel Care and Maintenance

Congratulations!! You've just bought a sharp, new set of wheels for your vehicle and that "just like new look" is exactly what you hoped for. But without proper care, that look won't last forever.

Your wheels can be the dirtiest part of your vehicle. Constant exposure to the elements as well as corrosive brake dust, dirt, tar, ocean and road salts can cause damage to the finish on your wheels and it is important to clean them often and properly. Here are a few tips to keep your wheels looking good.

• Buff on a coat of wax, or specially made wheel paint sealer upon installation and after washing to protect and prevent dirt and/or brake dust from easily sticking and bonding with the wheels finish.
• Wash your wheels with a mild soap and water solution. Harsh cleaners can easily strip away the clearcoat, or cause staining to the wheel.
• Never wash a wheel while it is hot. Try cooling them with cold water first.
• Stay away from automatic car washes, they may use harsh cleaners or stiff brushes that can easily scratch or damage your wheel.
• Wash one wheel at a time so that soap doesn't dry and bond to the finish.
