Syncrude Overburden Removal

Sep 27, 2013

Aecon is currently working under contract with Syncrude to remove overburden t their facility 40 km north of Fort McMurray. Under this contract Aecon is stripping away layers of muskeg and earth and then removing the overburden to expose the thick deposit of oil sand. The overburden is moved and stored for future reclamation of the land, upon completion of the mining operation, sometime in the future. The exposed oil sand is mined, trucked to crushers and then moved by conveyor to the bitumen extraction facilities.

The agreement, worth in total about $425 million (of which about a quarter has already been completed), expires in 2014.

Aecon excavators on site are capable of moving 3,500 cubic metres an hour, more than 10 times as much as what is moved on a typical highway project. Our largest trucks in site are capable of hauling 250 tonnes.

Scope of work on this project involved:

• Overburden stripping
• Mine reclamation
• Filter sand excavation and placement in dyke structures
• Construction of haul road
• Construction of drainage structures
• Special project work
• Annual volumes in excess of 20 million cubic metres
