Mining Supply and Service Companies Major Contributors To N.A.M.E

Sep 17, 2014

Mining companies depend on a variety of local supplies and services to successful run their operations. Sudbury has a well-developed network represented by the Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Services Association. SAMSSA represents the interests of the largest concentration of expertise in mining supply/products and services from within the most recognized center of excellence worldwide.

Atlas Copco

Training is a vital component in mining. Introducing an expensive piece of equipment by using a simulator to greater degree of confidence before they tackle the real deal.

A popular attraction at the Expo was Atlas Copco’s Simulator.

The training simulator is available on a rental basis or for outright purchase. Vale and Kirkland Lake Gold have purchased their own units to conduct in-house training.

Atlas Copco is a world leader in providing sustainable productivity solutions for mining, construction and industrial complexes. They provide equipment for drilling and rock excavation in surface and underground mining. Production and manufacturing units are located in Sweden, the United States, Canada, China and India.

Air Liquide

Air Liquide proudly displayed their products with the help of a large outdoor booth where welding demonstrations and competitions took place.

Air Liquide has been active in Canada for over 100 years and provides gases for industry, health and the environment.

“We provide cylinders for the mining industry that incorporates regulatory requirements, and Ministry of Transportation approval for transportation in compliance with the Mining Act and we operate in 86 countries”, said Guy Giroux, Account Executive for Northern Ontario.

Mobile Parts Inc.

Mobile Parts Inc. has grown from a modest distributor of truck parts for tractor trailers into a major supplier of parts, equipment and land cruisers modified for underground mining environments.  Our consistent growth has forced us to upgrade to new locations 3 times in the past 20 years. We now operate out of a 50,000 square foot complex resting on 10 acres of land.

“We sell mining equipment parts,” states Martin Luttrell, the General Manager of Mobile Parts Inc. “We have a full machine shop and can do repairs as well as build hard to find or custom parts.”

Luttrell says MPI distributes its products to 38 countries around the world including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Chile and Russia.

Walden Equipment

Walden Equipment, part of the Walden Group has become an industry leader in mine and industrial equipment. Walden is a family owned business that started as a rental house for mine equipment 17 years ago and has since grown into one of the industry leaders in mine equipment manufacturing and mine site services.

Over the past 2 years Walden has grown over 250% and now employs over 150 people in and throughout Ontario, Quebec, Mexico and Argentina.

One of the highlighted services that Walden Equipment offers is in mine hoisting, specializing in tensioning services for small and large mine hoists. Walden has completed many mine hoist rope installation from across Canada and in the United States. Walden has worked with all the major mining companies and contractors and of recent was contracted to rope one of the world largest cranes.

Fountain Tire

Mining companies are in the business of moving ore, men and equipment. Reliable transportation requires reliable tires. Fountain Tire carries an extensive line of mining tires for all terrain situations.

“Mining is a big part of our Fountain Tire’s business,” says Geoff McNaughton, a nine year veteran with the company.

Fountain Tire also provides onsite service from retreading to tire repair that help extend the life of tires and reduce costs to mining companies

Kal Tire

Mining companies and other tire users require and demand a high degree of reliability.  Kal Tire aims at providing longer tire life by introducing a temperature, pressure and monitoring system that can be inserted into the tire chamber.

The True Tire Technology system that will considerably improve how mine sites monitor tire temperature and pressure in order to increase safety, tire life, fuel efficiency and mine productivity.

Tires are in the top three operating expenses of a mine site. When tires run at optimal pressure a mine site will experience maximum value, savings and productivity increase related to this expense. In order to achieve this, a tire temperature and pressure monitoring system is required that is well-designed.

The information is transmitted wirelessly from the tire and warnings are displayed on screen from the sensor installed inside the tire chamber to a mobile or laptop or desk unit

Gorf Manufacturing/Construction

When it comes to mining contractors Gorf Manufacturing/Contracting Ltd. is among the best. Located in Timmins, Ontario Gorf constructs pretty much anything that needs to be built said Mark Norkum, General Manager.

“We design and construct buildings, mineshafts, vessels, process tanks,” Norkum said

Gorf focuses its services to Ontario, but has worked on projects in Europe, Northern British Columbia and at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec.

Gorf has worked on contracts for Goldcorp in Timmins to construct the Hoyle Pond Hoist Room – This contract consisted of the supply and installation of a new structural steel hoist room building approximately 40 feet by 60 feet. The hoist room was constructed as per the requirements and specifications of the client. We completed the excavation and earthworks required for the concrete foundation of the hoist room and hoist. We excavated down to bed rock and poured a reinforced concrete foundation. We also installed rock dowels for the hoist base. In addition to completing the hoist room Gorf also completed a full installation and commissioning of a 10 ft. diameter single drum hoist, the installation of a new 10ft diameter head sheave, a new three deck service cage, and the roping of the hoist, head sheave, and conveyance.

Gorf’s excellence was recognized by the Timmins business community when it was awarded the 2014 NOVA Award for Technology.

Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc.

Mitsubishi Electric provides mining companies with energy saving, variable frequency  drives and integrators used in motors that power  mining hoists, air vents, dewatering, conveyance and pretty much anything that is motor driven.

Their variable frequency drives control the motor and slow down by 10 percent leading to a 50 percent saving on energy use by the motor.

One of the products they were featuring was the GOT100 Interface with a live camera.

The goal of Mitsubishi is to provide reliable products and provide the industry leading warranty for their products.

VIVA Networks

In mining as in life communications, communications, communications is important for getting things done. VIVA Networks focuses on providing satellite communications and wireless internet hook ups for mining sites that are located in remote and inaccessible regions.

To demonstrate the viability of communications products VIVA provided Wi-Fi for the North America Mining Expo.

“It’s no different from a mining site,” said Gilles Desmarais, President and G.M.of VIVA

“What we do differently than our competitors is we provide intelligent bandwidth management,” Desmarais said.

VIVA provides communications services ranging from a mining camp of 300 to 400 people or mobile units for geologists working in the field.

The service requires a high degree of reliability and VIVA provides this with 24 hour support. Their services can be applied to the full cycle of mining from prospecting and exploration to development and operation.
