Our Approach to Sustainability

Oct 17, 2014
We recognise that our work can have an impact on society and the environment. So we are constantly striving to find new ways to improve;

Respect for human rights is fundamental to all our activities and our number one priority in the workplace is to protect the health and well-being of all our workers. We take a proactive approach to health and safety and we are committed to ensuring continuous improvement in our processes to prevent occupational disease and injuries.

Glencore Corporate Practice (GCP) is our corporate governance framework and the programme through which we manage sustainability. GCP reflects our corporate values; its practical application across our business is detailed in our Code of Conduct and this framework is reflected in our Sustainability Reports.

Our statement of Values and our Code of Conduct represent our commitment to upholding good business practices, along with the underlying policies that support our ongoing integration of sustainability into our operational management procedures.

The Glencore Corporate Practice (GCP) is our management system for sustainability. The GCP represents our commitment to upholding good business practices, including meeting or exceeding applicable laws and other external requirements. It drives our approach towards societal, environmental and compliance indicator and provides clear guidance on the standards we expect all our operations to achieve. The framework also provides oversight, through regular performance reporting.

The GCP is made of two parts:
1. The framework, which sets out our sustainability principles, guidance and policies
2. The GCP programme, which details how we implement the framework and work towards achieving our objectives
Our Values

Our Values are the most fundamental element of GCP. Our Values are the fundamental principles by which we conduct our business and are incorporated into all areas of GCP.

Our Code of Conduct

This gives practical guidance on how to work in accordance with Our Values. Everyone who works for Glencore, regardless of location or role, must comply with the Code of Conduct and encourage those around them to meet its requirements.

Our corporate policies

These are group-level operational standards that detail our expectations for management processes, procedures and achievements. Our corporate policies reflect areas and issues of group-wide strategic importance, such as crisis management, human rights and anti-corruption.

Our operational policies

These address activities specific to each commodity, asset or business segment. They are developed and implemented at an operational level and align with our corporate sustainability framework and polices.

We seek to ensure that our customers, suppliers, agents, service providers and contractors maintain business practices and workplaces which comply with Our Values and our Code of Conduct.

We also use our influence to raise awareness and consideration of the basic GCP principles within our joint ventures and entities in which we have non-controlling stakes.
