About the Company

Lakehead Ornamental Ironworks was opened in 1976 by Joseph Quast. It was a small business specializing mostly in residential work such as hand railings, candle holders and gates. His son Uwe Quast was a long time employee who gained years of experience in the miscellaneous metals field. Uwe Quast later bought his father’s business assets and went on his own.

Lakehead Ironworks Inc was founded in 1990 by the current president Uwe Quast who at this time has several decades of experience in the welding, miscellaneous and structural steel trades. During the period from 1990 to 2008 the business grew from a small 2500 square foot building with 2 employees to a 11,000 square foot building with 6 employees. Also, during this time the focus of the business shifted from residential hand railings and other small projects to the fabrication and installation of structural steel buildings both in Canada and abroad.

Over the past few years the focus of the business has evolved to include heavy industrial repairs of various mining equipment, the fabrication and installation of structural steel buildings both in Canada and abroad as well as the miscellaneous metals work. Lakehead Ironworks also erects pre engineered buildings.

Many building projects require more than one specialized metals trade. Lakehead Ironworks can handle it all including structural steel, decking, OWS joists and miscellaneous metals. Having one company provide all of these services can greatly reduce project costs and increase efficiency.

Never forgetting it's roots the company still has a strong miscellaneous division and has earned the reputation of the “go to people” for some of the most unique and difficult miscellaneous projects conceivable.

The ongoing expansion of the business lead to the need for a larger, more efficient facility. In May 2012 planning started for the construction of a brand new 23,000 square foot facility which was completed and fully operational in the Spring of 2013.  The new facility enables Lakehead Ironworks to work more efficiently, accommodate 22 full time employees and tackle larger projects.  Always up for a challenge and realizing the need to diversify in todays market, the Company is now working on many bridge repair projects in the area.

Our long term goal is to continue serving the commercial, industrial and mining sectors with unequaled quality, service and integrity.
