Aboriginal Healing and Wellness

Mar 10, 2021

The Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy is a program that is designed to combine traditional and mainstream programs and services to reduce family violence and assist in improving Aboriginal health. The AHWS program is a joint program between First Nations, Aboriginal organizations, and the Ontario Government. The strategy is funded by 5 Ontario government ministries:

  • Children and Youth Services
  • Community and Social Services
  • Health and Long-Term Care
  • Aboriginal Affairs
  • Ontario Women’s Directorate

Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation has been involved with the AHWS Program since January, 2006.

Healthy Babies / Healthy Children

A child's early years - from before birth to age six - are very important. Healthy babies are more likely to develop into healthy children, and healthy children are more likely to grow up to be healthy teenagers and healthy adults.

That's the purpose of Ontario's Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program - to help children get a healthy start in life. The program does this by helping infants and children up to age six and their families through:

  • supports for new parents
  • help in finding community programs and resources on all kinds of subjects such as: breastfeeding, nutrition and health services, parenting programs and family literacy programs
