Green investments in KGHM - three solar farms are being built

Jul 9, 2020

The copper tycoon is not slowing down and is investing in renewable energy projects. The first photovoltaic farm is already being commissioned by KGHM Polska Miedź SA in the vicinity of Legnica. The company is also finalizing contracts for the construction of two more photovoltaic power plants in the Copper Belt.

- We react to trends in the global economy, without it we would not be at the forefront of copper producers. How copper is produced is more and more important, which is why we want to use renewable energy sources and become part of "green copper". We believe that in the future this will translate into our market position, which is why investing in photovoltaics is attractive to us , said Marcin Chludziński, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź SA

- The development of renewable energy sources in Poland would not be possible without intensive government support for both farm investors and individual farms. In 2019, we launched the My Electricity Program, which was very popular. We support the creation of photovoltaic forms. Congratulations that KGHM is in line with the trend of producing green energy - emphasized Krzysztof Kubów, the Head of the Political Cabinet of the Prime Minister.

In line with the strategy of Polska Miedź, by 2030 KGHM wants to cover half of its energy demand from its own sources, including RES.

- We have over 200 hectares of our own land that can be used for projects related to energy from renewable sources. Here in Legnica, we are already at the stage of the last permits, and soon we are starting new projects. We are also considering obtaining energy, e.g. from wind farms - announced Marcin Chludziński.

Implemented by KGHM Stratega 4E focuses on efficiency, ecology, e-industry and flexibility. One of the priorities is the Energy Development Program at KGHM, which is the main element of which is photovoltaics.

Investments are carried out in three locations. KGHM ZANAM is planning to build a photovoltaic farm with a capacity of approximately 3 MWp in the vicinity of Huta Miedzi Legnica. Another photovoltaic power plant is being built on the premises of the Hydrotechnical Department. According to the assumptions, the power plant will generate 5,400 MWh of energy per year, which will be fully used by ZG Lubin.

The last of the three projects provides for the construction of a renewable energy farm at the Głogów Copper Smelter. The power plant will generate 5,500 MWh of energy annually, all energy will be consumed by the steel plant.

- We have already concluded an agreement with a designer who will be responsible for obtaining approvals and administrative permits and preparation of construction projects for these two photovoltaic power plants - said Piotr Kuzdra, Director of the Energy Development Department.

KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest electricity consumers in Poland. Each year it uses over 2.5 TWh, second only to the Polish State Railways.
