Achieving Over 4 Times Wear Life of Teeth in Slag
Challenge
Slag removal process is an extremely high abrasive application. Interpaving was getting a maximum wear life of 30 hours for their points using a Cat 365 machine when removing slag. The application requires the use of the bucket to rip hard pan of top layer slag and then re-handle the material. The challenge was to try and extend the service life of the points in order to reduce costs and downtime in order to become more productive.
Engineered Solution
By studying the wear patterns and customer requirements, we selected to apply chromium carbide overlay via sub arc process to address their specific application concerns. The results were impressive with an increased wear life of 4.6 times compared to normal point. The customer has saved 13.8% on a cost per hour basis as well as reducing downtime by 2.7 hours due to the extended wear life gains using these modified points.
Technology Utilized
• Chrome carbide overlay “Rough Grit” held in place by welded matrix
• Sub arc process
Results
• Test proven to extend wear life by 4.6 times from normal points
• Saving of 2.7 hours in change-outs due to the extended wear life
• Reduction of 13.8% in direct cost to the client for the product on a cost per hour basis
