Apprenticeship
An apprentice is someone who is taking a trade and working under the guidance of skilled workers called journeypersons. Apprentices are required to attend three terms of school consisting of eight week blocks over a four or five year period and have completed 8000 hours of on the job training.
The training is free and attending school is mandatory when asked to attend by the Millwright Regional Council of Ontario. If you fail to attend scheduled classes you will terminate your apprenticeship contract.
Apprentices start at 60% of the journeypersons pay rate and wages are increased at periodic intervals until receiving his/her Certificate of Qualification.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Successful completion of grade 10 math or equivalent
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must have a SIN card
- Must reside within local 1151 territorial area. This includes the districts of Rainy River, Kenora, (including the Patricia Portion), Thunder Bay and that part of the Districts of Algoma and Cochrane, north of the 49th Parallel and west of the North Driftwood, Abitibi and Moose Rivers to James Bay including the Rivers herein named.
Please also include:
- Copy of your valid driver’s license
- Copy of educational transcripts and any other related experience or training
The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during the apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination of age, race, religion or gender.
HOW ARE CANDIDATES SELECTED?
After your application has been submitted, selected applicants will be invited to write an aptitude test that consists of mathematical and mechanical sections. The test date will be determined by the Apprenticeship Committee and the availability of the instructor.
We start our test at the scheduled time, applicants must be present when the test begins or will not be able to take the test. When writing the test, you are not allowed to bring in any reference material and you cannot take anything out of the building after the test is over.
Only those applications that achieve 70% or greater will be given an interview. The interview date will be sent to you by e-mail with the time and date of the interview stated in the letter.
If the applicant has a successful interview, he/she will be sent out to work where you will work with a journey person on a specific job site. When you are not working, you will attend structured training classes to learn different skills needed to become a better journey-person and make yourself more employable.
