Belmont
The Belmont Project represents one of the Company’s exciting grass roots exploration projects. The property comprises approximately 5,500 hectares in 69 unpatented mining claims in 8 separate blocks in Limerick, Wollaston, Lake, Marmora and Belmont Townships. FNI’s staked mining claims cover many nickel and copper occurrences identified in the Ontario Mineral Deposit Inventory and have targeted areas with the potential to host Vale’s Voisey’s Bay and Kennecott’s Eagle Type deposits.
The Belmont Project area is cross-cut by a number of regional highways with a well developed power supply grid.
There has been some exploration and mining in the area by numerous companies and individuals since the late 1800’s for any number of economic commodities including gold, silver, zinc, copper, nickel, and uranium as well as industrial minerals. Several occurrences of nickel and copper have been identified in the area including the Limerick Nickel Deposit, discovered in 1961 by Macassa hosted in coarse grained gabbro and pyroxenite on the eastern side of the Thanet Metagabbro Complex with a non 43-101 compliant resource estimate of 2,000,000 tonnes averaging 1.0% Ni and 0.25% Cu (Northern Miner, April 12, 1962).
The Belmont Project covers an area of the Central Metasedimentary Belt known as the Belmont Domain. The project area is underlain by calcareous and siliceous meta-sediments, felsic to mafic meta-volcanics with numerous intrusions varying in composition from granites to ultramafics. These rocks all fall within the Grenville Province and have been exposed to high grade regional metamorphism. Deformation has resulted in a northeast-southwest axial folding trends that parallel the regional fold patterns in the area.
The presence of mafic to ultramafic intrusions in close proximity to sulphide bearing meta-sediments represents a good exploration environment for nickel and copper sulphide mineralization.
Recent Exploration activities on the property include:
• 5,000 line kilometer airborne geophysical survey consisting of a magnetometer survey and AeroTem III electromagnetic system
• Reconnaissance mapping and prospecting
• 2,885 metres of diamond drilling in Marmora and Limerick Townships on 12 holes
• Borehole geophysical surveys
• 465 assay analysis
Continued exploration will consist of reconnaissance mapping and prospecting and a combination of airborne and ground geophysics and diamond drilling on priority targets identified by the airborne geophysical survey in 2008.
All of FNI’s exploration activities have been carried out using sound environmental procedures following or exceeding the recommended industry best practices. All drill sites have been re-contoured and re-vegetated with naturally occurring plant species to minimize any impacts related to our exploration programs.
Continued exploration will consist of reconnaissance mapping and prospecting and a combination of airborne and ground geophysics and diamond drilling on priority targets identified by the airborne geophysical survey in 2008.
