SMS has replacement parts for “vintage” all-makes machines

If you have a machine that’s more than five years old and you need a part or component for it, chances are, cost is a consideration. You want to keep the machine running, but because of its age, it may not be worth spending very much to put in a brand-new or OEM remanufactured replacement part or component. You want a less expensive option.

SMS has a cost-effective alternative that may be just right for you — used, reconditioned or rebuilt replacement parts from H&R Construction Parts, Inc.

“At H&R, we buy older or damaged machines and dismantle them for the parts and components,” said Steve Hansen, Founder, CEO and co-owner of H&R Construction Parts. “We have a large supply of Komatsu parts, but we buy all brands of equipment and can supply parts for most mid- to large-size construction machines.”

“We buy machines at auctions, from dealers who’ve taken them as trade-ins and from insurance brokers,” said H&R President Larry Mohr. “We also purchase direct from equipment users. It takes us about 80 man-hours to tear a machine down and part it out. We refurbish most components ourselves, but we send our major hydraulic work to an outside shop.”

H&R products include engines, final/swing drives, cylinder heads, crankshafts, fuel-injection pumps, camshafts, turbo chargers, transmissions, torque converters, differentials, hydraulic pumps and motors, hydraulic valves and cylinders, and more.

Sometimes, H&R parts are sold essentially ‘as is’ and those are classified as used parts. H&R components are almost always rebuilt or refurbished, which includes disassembly, inspection and, where necessary, replacing parts before putting them back together. Units are then dyno-tested before going on the shelf.

“Because of the inspections and testing we perform, we’re very confident in the quality of our parts and components,” said Mohr. “That’s why every H&R part goes out the door with a warranty. Our warranty is 30 days on all used parts; 90 days to six months on most components; and up to a year on some hydraulic components.”

Long history with SMS

H&R Construction Parts got its start in Buffalo, New York, in 1984 when Hansen and a partner pooled their resources to buy some old parts inventory and a company car. Through the years, the company grew by continuing to buy machines and part them out, by bringing on new employees and customers, and by adding new products, such as “all-makes” parts.

In 2002, H&R signed an agreement with SMS Equipment (formerly operating as four separate sister companies known as Coneco Equipment, Transwest Mining Systems, Federal Equipment) to be a “preferred vendor.” SMS Equipment, which had its own used-parts operation in Edmonton at the time, turned that business over to H&R. Today, SMS is the distributor for H&R alternative parts.

Used parts

“The Edmonton operation has helped us develop a better relationship with SMS, which has grown even stronger during the past couple of years,” said Hansen. “Not only does SMS use us to help their customers locate hard-to-find, used or refurbished parts, but we also work with them to sell their “surplus” parts. Surplus parts are new parts that, for one reason or another, have gone unsold for some years and the company now just wants to move them out. We have a vast network of customers, so we’re often able to match a customer with parts that have been on the shelf for a while.”

Competitively priced

With its locations in Buffalo and Edmonton, Alberta, (as well as Riverside, California, and Atlanta, Georgia) parts from H&R are easily accessible to and readily available through all SMS branch locations.

“The customer who wants and needs our parts is often a small operator who may have just one or two machines that are probably long out of warranty,” said Hansen. “Or it might be a larger operation that has some older-model machines — for example, Komatsu Dash-3, Dash-5 or Dash-6 excavators. For units like that, we have parts in stock, and they’re competitively priced.”

So the next time you’re in the market for an alternative part or component, stop in or call your nearest SMS branch and ask about H&R parts. They may have just what you’re looking for.
