Canadian Pipe
A thermic lance is a pipe or tube filled with wire rods. The lance is connected to a source of oxygen and ignited. As the thermic lance is consumed, heat is generated enabling the bars to melt a variety of materials.
Clothing:
We recommend that the user/operator of the thermic lance be well protected and exercise proper safety precautions. We suggest the operator wear heat protective gloves and a welder’s mask (preferably with the 4 1/2” x 5 1/2” No. 5 or No. 6 shade) and a hard hat.
Oxygen:
A minimum of equipment is required. An oxygen hose and fittings and a supply of pressure oxygen, and a regulator are necessary. Generally a bar will be consumed within 4 to 5 minutes. Oxygen consumption in a standard 3/8 x 10’6” thermic lance is 10 cubic feet per minute.
Most Effective Thermic Lance:
Numerous burn tests have been conducted with similar ambient temperatures and with an exact 75 PSI being maintained. The Push Fit proved to be the most economical thermic lance, with a burning time for a 3/8” x 10’6” lance of 5 minutes.

Thermic Lance bars are available with plain ends, threaded one end, threaded both ends, threaded and coupled and push fit quick couple.
Applications
- Cleaning out freeze-ups in furnaces or ladles.
- Cutting spills into pieces that can be easily handled.
- Removing cupola skulls.
- Opening difficult tap holes.
- Cutting and removing refractory materials.
- Salvaging heavy sections of cast iron and non-ferrous metals, such as bronze, copper, aluminum and stainless steel.
- Penetrating holes or severing sections of concrete.
- Underwater cutting applications.
