Economic Development

Feb 4, 2021

Our Mission is to empower the membership to work together with common goals holding social, economic, environmental and cultural considerations, in building a stronger local economy for Nipissing First Nation and its members. The Economic Development Office is committed to the betterment of Nipissing First Nation communities.

Doing Business with Nipissing First Nation

Small business and self-employment account for a large part of NFN’s economy. We have 40 small businesses run by nation citizens on-reserve, and an additional eight companies who lease land and/or space to operate companies that are not First Nation-owned, but that generate employment for our citizens and region.

Partnerships & Funding

Nipissing also leverages local, provincial and federal partnerships in ways that support our Gichi-Naaknigewin (Big Law or Constitution). This is evidenced in NFN’s investments in renewable energy projects, small business development, sustainable resource development, the construction of a commercial/light industrial business park, and a commitment to continually exploring innovative projects and partnerships to benefit the nation now and in the long term.

We increasingly borrow from ourselves (as opposed to traditional banks) so that interest is paid back to the trust and ultimately gets redistributed to citizens in the future from the profits generated by the projects we invest in.  This has allowed us to enhance quality of life and benefits for our citizens living both on and off reserve.

NFN Owned Business

Beaucage Park

The park remains open for weekend day use by NFN members and affiliates during the summer months. Members planning a large gathering should call ahead.

Projects

Bineshii Commercial & Light Industrial Park – The Bineshii Commercial & Light Industrial Park is located on the north side of highway 17 between Young Forestry and the Anishinabek Nation Head Office near Yellek.  To date, 3 phase hydro services have been installed and natural gas services were completed in 2017.

In September 2020, FedNor announced $1 million in funding to NFN to support the development of the Bineshii Business Park by designing and constructing the local infrastructure required to open up to 35 commercial and light industrial lots. The project scope is to develop 34 commercial/light industrial lots, with completion estimated for the fall of 2021.

Duchesnay Creek Bridge – In March 2019, the MTO contract to replace the Duchesnay Creek Bridge and remove the overpass was sole sourced to the Nipissing-Miller Partnership. This limited partnership, in which Nipissing has a 51% stake, is structured using Miller’s expertise and local NFN labour and other construction services (sub-contractors, etc.). This two-year project, valued at $12 million dollars, marked a significant change in the way of doing business and a step forward towards reconciliation by providing real opportunities for members to participate in projects taking place on our territory.

KEB Head Office – The Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB) celebrated the grand opening of their head office in the Bineshii Business Park in the fall of 2018. The KEB is the central education body that will support the Anishinabek First Nations in achieving their education priorities through the Anishinabek Education System (AES) and we are pleased that our proposal to house their office building on NFN was selected through an RFP process.

Natural Gas Installations – We have now completed natural gas installations in the communities of Duchesnay, Yellek, Beaucage and Jocko Point.  A feasibility study is planned to determine if it is possible to bring natural gas services to Garden Village.

NFN Solar Projects – The 4 rooftop solar projects, with a total capacity of 166 kW, are under contract with the Independent Electricity Systems Operator (IESO) to generate electricity at a rate of $0.548/kWh, which translates to approximately $100,000 annually.  These projects are located in Garden Village (Health Centre, Nipissing Ojibway Daycare, Seniors’ Lodge) and in Duchesnay (Nbisiing Secondary School).

NFN – Solar Power Network (SPN) Partnership – Nipissing First Nation and Solar Power Network (SPN) have partnered to develop and operate a portfolio of roof mounted solar PV systems located throughout central and southern Ontario. The scope of this project has changed where the number of solar PV contracts was reduced from50 systems (14.2 MW) to 22 systems (6.7MW).

The systems are fully constructed and are in commercial operation.  The ownership structure has changed where Solar Power Network sold its share in the partnership to Grasshopper Solar, a large renewable energy development company in southern Ontario. NFN’s return on investment is 15%.

NFN Greenhouse

A feasibility study is underway for a production scale greenhouse for Nipissing First Nation. The greenhouse will be self-sustaining, provide NFN with an additional revenue stream, provide employment and training opportunities, build capacity, and provide a healthy, sustainable food source for NFN members and surrounding areas.

The study will be broken down into the following main themes and focus on providing site specific options to build and operate a commercially viable year-round greenhouse on Nipissing First Nation:

  1. Community engagement and alignment with Nipissing First Nation’s strategic plan
  2. Market demand for produce (both on reserve and for export within a 200 km radius)
  3. Labour supply requirement (greenhouse horticulturalists, building operations managers as well as sales and produce market strategists)
  4. Greenhouse building design and operations and the availability of site specific resources and opportunities for systems integration
  5. Economics and business case validation

NFN Small Business Centre

As part of the KEB office building located in the Bineshii Business Park, the building design features 5,000 square feet of commercial space that is available for lease to NFN businesses and entrepreneurs at special incubator rates, and that is open to non-member businesses at competitive rates.
