The Ontario Mining Association is strongly committed to providing accurate information and opportunities to educate teachers, students and the public on the value of minerals and mining to our society and our industry's commitment to corporate social responsibility. MINED OPEN INNOVATION CHALLENGE
The OMA, which represents some of the world's leading resources companies operating in Ontario,initiated this competition as part of its innovation agenda, aimed at driving enhanced performance in health and safety (mining with zero harm); environmental protection and energy efficiency (mining with zero carbon and zero waste); and productivity (building global competitiveness). SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW MINING
SYTYKM was a video contest for Ontario high school students offered from 2009 to 2016. Students were asked to create a 2-3 minute video on the benefits of mining or a 15 second commercial themed around the Ontario mining brand. View the winning videos here.
TEACHERS' MINING TOUR
The Teachers' Mining Tour is a professional development program for educators, implemented through a partnership between the OMA, Mining Matters and The Canadian Ecology Centre. The objectives of the tour are to present modern mining techniques and technologies, to promote a wide range of mining careers, to distribute resources and create a network of teachers utilizing mining as a theme in their classrooms, and to facilitate informed decisions about the economic, social and environmental aspects of the mining industry. Tour itineraries include presentations from industry professionals, resource workshops and visits to mine sites and mine manufacturing facilities. Contact us to learn more.
NICKEL QUEST
Nickel Quest is an educational video that provides a virtual tour of an underground nickel mine.
MINING NEW OPPORTUNITIES
This video resource is aimed at empowering an Aboriginal audience and is intended to help First Nations communities better understand the mineral industry and the employment and entrepreneurial opportunities it offers. The film was created by Big Soul, an Aboriginal owned and operated television production house. This video is produced in five languages - Cree, Oji-Cree, Ojibway, English and French. It is supplemented with a Mining New Opportunities Teacher's Resource and Speaker's Guide (PDF).
SKILLS CANADA-ONTARIO
Skills Canada-Ontario is an organization whose mandate it to encourage more Ontario youth to explore the many career opportunities that are available in the skilled trades and technologies. The Ontario Technological Skills Competition is an annual event where students learn about careers, engage with industry professionals, and participate in workshops.
MINING MATTERS
Mining Matters is a national organization that brings the wonder of Canada's geology and mineral resources to students, educators and industry. They provide current information about rocks, minerals, metals, and mining and offer exceptional educational resources, including classroom ready kits that meet provincial Earth science and geography curriculum expectations. The Mining Matters website is an excellent resource for educators and students.
MINING INDUSTRY HUMAN RESOURCES COUNCIL
The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) works in collaboration with stakeholders to develop solutions to meet the current and future human resources needs in the sector. MiHR's "Explore for More" web site features a wide variety of resources focused on educating students and teachers about careers in the mining sector. These include mining career profiles, videos and presentations.
EDGEO
EdGEO is a national organization that has been supporting Earth science educational development workshops for teachers since the 1970s. It is coordinated by the Canadian Geoscience Education Network of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES). EdGEO workshops provide teachers with enhanced knowledge, increased confidence and educational resources to use in the classroom. Workshops are organized by local geoscientists and teachers. Grants of up to $3000 per workshop are available from the National EdGEO Program. EdGEO recently developed two excellent teaching resources: Bringing Earth Science to Life and Putting the Earth into Science. Both of these resources contain proven learning activities, honed in previous EdGEO workshops, and any materials needed to support them.
THE CANADIAN GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION NETWORK (CGEN)
CGEN is a national organization, consisting of an affiliation of stakeholders concerned with geoscience education and outreach, including educators and Earth science professionals from government, industry and academia. CGEN serves to actively stimulate geoscience awareness and serves as a forum to discuss matters related to geoscience education across the country. CGEN undertakes both national and regional education and outreach activities and raises money to support these efforts. CGEN meetings are held annually in conjunction with the Geological Association of Canada Conference. Regional CGEN Chapters also exist where members may meet on a regular basis to plan and implement activities in their areas.
EARTH SCIENCES CANADA
Earth Sciences Canada is an informative web site that features the Earth Science Careers web site. The Earth Science Careers web site provides students with the opportunity to explore careers and is a repository of career information including career profiles of professionals working in all aspects of Earth Sciences, including the resource sectors, consulting, government and academia.
