Education

Feb 4, 2021

The Education Department promotes lifelong learning and educational achievement through various programs and supports at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels, as well as adult education. Through Nbisiing Bus Lines, we also provide safe and reliable school bus and charter transportation.

The Education Department works with education partners, including provincial school boards, the Kinoomaadziwin Education Body and the Ministry of Education, to advocate for NFN students and ensure they are successful.

Elementary & Secondary (Kinoomaadiwgamgoon / Kinoomaagewin)

The Education Department promotes educational achievement and provides support, guidance and programming for students Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. We also oversee the operation of Nbisiing Secondary School. See the NFN Elementary and Secondary Policy & Guidelines for more details on the programs and services we offer.

As part of the Anishinabek Education System, we work closely with the Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB) to deliver educational programs and services for NFN students who reside on-reserve and locally off-reserve.

Nbisiing Secondary School

Located on the shores of Lake Nipissing, Nbisiing Secondary School is a First Nations operated and provincially-inspected private secondary school. Students receive a high-quality education leading to a provincial secondary school diploma with an emphasis on First Nations’ traditions and values.

Nbisiing Secondary School represents a new vision for education in our Nation that focuses on the whole student – the intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and cultural/spiritual.

Nbisiing students are offered a variety of high school courses in small class sizes that deliver academic excellence, First Nations pride, and the skills to succeed.

Post-Secondary (Gchi-Kinoomaajiwgamik)

Post-secondary education can help you puruse a passion, increase your earning potential, improve your employability, and contribute to our Nation and other communities. As a NFN member, you can apply for funding to help get your college, university and professional qualifications to become economically self-sufficient and realize your potential.

Adult Education

The NFN Adult Education Program supports students 21 and over to get their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Classes are provided twice a week in each community (Garden Village and Duchesnay). Students will benefit from a NFN teacher on-site and monthly incentives.

This program is provided in partnership with Ontario Works, Employment and Training, and the Near North District School Board.

Nbisiing Bus Lines (Boozwin)

Nbisiing Bus Lines provides safe, reliable and cost-effective school transportation to our community, serving West Nipissing, Nipissing First Nation and North Bay. Nbisiing Bus Lines also provides charters for various NFN programs and functions.

Anishinabek Education System (AES)

The Anishinabek Education System (AES) promotes Anishinaabe culture and language and improves education outcomes for Anishinabek students. Through the Anishinabek Nation Education Agreement, Nipissing First Nation and 23 participating First Nations, have full control over how to best allocate education funding. The funding will also allow for the delivery of educational programs and services. To support the AES, NFN passed the Nipissing First Nation Education Law.

In moving forward, the Master Education Agreement was signed between the participating First Nations and Ontario to support Anishinabek student success and well-being in AES and provincially-funded schools.

The Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB) is the central administrative structure that oversees the implementation of the AES. Their head office is housed on NFN territory in the Bineshii Business Park (Yellek). The KEB has a 12-member Board of Directors that is made up of representatives from the four Anishinabek Regional Education Councils. NFN has two representatives on KEB’s Regional Education Council #3 who bring our priorities to AES.
