Indigenous Support for Student Learning Program (SSLP)
The BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS) is now offering the Indigenous Support for Student Learning Program (SSLP). The SSLP is a time-limited project for Indigenous students who have limited financial resources, including those living with disabilities. We are accepting applications for students who are enrolled in Formal education (either online, remote, or on-site learning) to receive a laptop and accessories.
Department Mandate:
The pursuit of education and training is important as it exposes students to new developments in their academic and future careers it helps them grow and perform better. Basically, it broadens their knowledge base and helps them derive new ways of interpreting and implementing things. This ensures a a continued supply of learned human resources that will enhance and sustain future educational goals. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that resources are allocated to support and encourage this initiative that is geared at developing the student to sustain present and future survival of the education of our youth.
Programs and Services:
Post-Secondary Funding:
We strive to fund approximately 100 students to enrolled in College and University. We strive to ensure a fair selection process. Funding from Indian and Northern Affairs has been reduced this year. Funding reduced by $311,420.00 from last year.
Graduation Awards:
FWFN wishes to celebrate the success of their students.
College Graduates
FWFN continues to issue graduation awards to a student who gives us copies of their diplomas. We award a maximum of $1,000 for a College Diploma. We award $500 for a Certificate. The $500 will be deducted from any future awards. Students can only receive this award for one diploma program. Any future diplomas will not receive an award.
University Graduates
FWFN continues to issue graduation awards to students who give us copies of their diplomas. We award a maximum of $1,500 for a University Degree. If a student has already received a college graduation award that amount will be deducted from this award.
High School Graduates
FWFN awards Grade 12 students with a $200 award
Elementary School Graduates
FWFN awards grade 8 graduates with a $100 award
Travel Bursaries:
FWFN recognizes the importance of broad based learning opportunities.
High School Students
For school sanctioned trips FWFN will contribute 50% of the cost of travel, accommodations and some fees to a maximum of $1,000 for the entire high school career of a student. FWFN will not cover the cost of spending money or meals.
Post-Secondary Students
For school sanctioned trips FWFN will contribute 50% of the cost of travel, accommodations and some fees to a maximum of $1,000 for the entire post-secondary career of a student. FWFN will not cover the cost of spending money or meals.
School Uniforms:
St. Patrick and St. Ignatius has mandatory requirements for school uniforms. FWFN will cover the cost for band member students to receive up to $300 for Grade 9 students and $200 for students from Grades 10-12. The cost of this service is direct billed to FWFN.
FWFN Busing:
We have 5 buses with drivers and monitors serving our children. We are currently seeking an additional driver and a couple on-call drivers.
Nutrition Program:
FWFN puts together and distributes 120 snack bag for every day a child is in school. This program is available to students in grades JK- Grade 12. The bag consists of 1 grain, 1 dairy and 1 fruit. This program also supplies a morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack for our onsite JK program. This program employs 1 band member, and is running very well. Nokiwiin has now assumed the responsibility of payment for the food for this program.
Driver’s Education Funding:
We have a constant and steady flow of students accessing this program. High school Students must complete an application at least 2 weeks prior to their training. FWFN will pay up to $700 to assist with their training. This is an incentive program for our high school students.
Upward Bound Tutoring Program:
(Temporarily Not Running)
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4;00-5:00 in association with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board – provide homework help and a snack for the students who access this program. This program runs from October until May.
JK Program:
2018-2019 was the first year this program ran on FWFN. The classroom is located in the same building as the bingo hall, and is proceeding very well. Children are excelling in this program. Parents seem to appreciate this new incentive. The children are bused to the school location, given a light breakfast, lunch and snacks. This program employees 1 band member as a class room support person, and utilizers our nutrition program.

Curriculum Funding:
Elementary Students
FWFN processes a $30 payment to the parents of elementary students on a bi-yearly basis. These payments are made in September and February of each year. The purpose of these payments are to offset some of the expenses of necessary school supplies.
High School Students
FWFN processes a $100 payment directly to the student on a bi-yearly basis. These payments are made in September and February of each year. The purpose of these payments are to offset some of the expenses of necessary school supplies.
Backpack Program
JK- Grade 6
For the past 2 years FWFN has been able to access funding to purchase a backpack and a reusable lunch bag for our community/band member students. This program has been well received and assists parents with school start up costs.
Grade 7- Grade 12
For the past 2 years FWFN has been able to access funding to purchase a backpack and enough school supplies for our community/band members to start school. This program has been well received and assists parents with initial start up costs.

Project Coordinator (6 Month Contract)
Under the supervision of the Health Manager, the Project Coordinator will work along with the Cultural and Recreation Coordinator on a part-time basis with a wide range of duties for the design of a Red Jingle Dress to be displayed at our Annual First Nation pow-wow honouring our Missing and Murdered Women, Girls and LGBTQ2S families.
Accounts Receivable Clerk
The Accounts Receivable (A/R) Clerk is directly responsible for performing data entry and related duties in posting accounts receivable payments.
Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Fort William First Nation requires an energetic, motivated and career-minded Chief Financial Officer (CFO) responsible for reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
