"The current legal regime for mining has allowed Chile to be the world's leading copper producer"

Apr 23, 2021
In conversation with Federico Joannon in the program La Mesa de El Mostrador, the Executive President of the Mining Council, Joaquín Villarino expressed the need to maintain the existing regulatory system in a new Constitution, where the participation of the State coexists virtuously, through Codelco, with other private, Chilean and foreign actors.

Likewise, the union leader emphasized the need to keep the rules, stable and clear, and with a reasonable tax burden, because mining companies come to Chile to stay, making large investments.

He added that, in his opinion, the Constitution must also establish sustainable development as a basic principle with its three pillars: generating economic wealth, contributing to social development and meeting high environmental standards, for which environmental institutions must be perfected.

On the other hand, Joaquín Villarino pointed out that large mining is in favor of a tax regime that provides additional resources to the mining regions and is available to address modifications to tax legislation, including the royalty, but studying the consequences well. "You have to sit down and talk and see if there is room, or not, to raise the tax burden," he said.
