ALS has extensive experience in racing chemistry, analysing tens of thousands of biological specimens per year for the presence of performance altering and therapeutic drugs.

ALS has tested in the area of racing chemistry for over 70 years, analysing tens of thousands of biological specimens per year for the presence of performance altering and therapeutic drugs. In addition to testing racing animals (equine and canine), we test for horse and livestock shows and exhibitions.

Our drug testing laboratory has extensive cross training in each key area including UHPLC/HRMS, LC/MS/MS, GC/MS, ICP/MS, and immunoassay operations. All of our chemists and technicians are thoroughly trained analysts and chain-of-custody protocols.

Jurisdictions serviced

ALS currently performs animal drug testing for many U.S. states – Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming — and the countries of Mexico, Panama, and Columbia.
Additionally, we provide split-sample testing to almost every racing jurisdiction in the U.S. and several foreign countries.  The U.S. map below colour-delineates the states where ALShas, or is currently, conducting testing.

Our procedures are reviewed and accepted under our accreditations for ISO/IEC 17025, ILAC G-7, and RMTC. Since 2009, ALS laboratories is fully accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for all parameters required by drug testing programs. In 2013 ALS was the first lab in the U.S. to add Cobalt analysis onto our ISO/IEC 17025 scope. In 2014 ALS was one of the first five U.S. labs to receive accreditation from Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC). Our Technical Director, Dr. Anthony Fontana, and Chief Science Officer, Dr. Norman Hester continue to serve on the RMTC’s Scientific Advisory Committee.

Our staff’s experience in drug testing, coupled with our forensic science expertise, enables us to give “expert witness” testimony at hearings and in court cases. We have done so in dozens of cases in Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Oregon, and Indiana.

We are dedicated to upholding a clean and healthy sport, working closely as members of the RMTC Scientific Advisory Committee. ALS has several employees who are members of the Association of Official Racing Chemists (AORC). Below is a map of our past and current clients.
