We can restore the surface of the land so it will not erode by wind or water and establish self sustaining vegetation which will create long term stability with low maintenance. If appropriate, we can take the process one step further and re-establish a forest so that the land is not only rehabilitated, but is restored as a productive component of the ecosystem.
