Brighter Futures
 
The Brighter Futures program is a community-based health promotion and ill-health prevention program. The program promotes health and prevents ill-health through learning-related activities that strive to increase awareness, change attitudes, build knowledge and enhance skills. 
 
The program is made up of five components: 
 
  • Mental Health
  • Child Development
  • Parenting
  • Healthy Babies
  • Injury prevention
 
Community Health Representative (CHR)
 
The CHR provides a wide range of support services on health education, prevention and promotion. The CHR will assist and support the health team and act as a liaison to the community and provide support services to AON Community members. 
 
The CHR main role is to motivate community members to participate in health programs./activities. This is accomplished through workshops and activities and to make sure our traditional cultural values are maintained.

Health Director - Tamara Paul 
 
Tamara plans, organizes, directs and controls the delivery of services offered by the Health team: CHR/Brighter Futures, Recreation Director, NNADAP, Community Wellness and Medical Transportation. The Health Director acts as a liaison between community members and health staff, as well as an advocate with other health related affairs.

National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP)
 
The NNADAP is a Health Canada program that is laregly controlled by First Nation communities and organizations. The program's goal has been to help First Nation communities set up and operate programs aimed at reducing high levels of alcohol, drug, and solvent abuse among on-reserve populations. 
 
This program works closely with the Health Department staff to develop, create, and support workshops, education and events to promote healthier and sober lifestyles.
 
Intervention activities, aimed at dealing with existing abuse problems at the earliest possible stage, include: discussion groups and social programs; traditional, spiritual and cultural programs. 
 
Aftercare activities, aimed at preventing alcohol and drug abuse problems from reoccuring, include:
 
  • Counselling
  • Sharing circles
  • Support groups
  • Crisis intervention
  • Support visits
  • Outreach visits
  • Treatment referrals
  • Detox referrals
  • Medical referrals

Community Wellness
 
Boozhoo, my name is Mia Seymour and I have been working as our Community Wellness Worker since 2017. This program covers Health related services, wellness strategy's and communicating with our community members. On a monthly basis, I do activities covering our traditional practices, health related issues and health education to our Community. My role in the Health Department is to make sure all community members are satisfied by promoting a healthy lifestyle and to prevent illness and accidents.

Healthy Babies and Healthy Children
 
The HBHC program helps children get a healthy start in life. This program provides support and services during pregnancy and to families with children from birth to school entry. The HBHC program offers screening opportunities and home visiting services for families who may benefit from additional support. Public health nurses and family home visitors work ogether to provide:
 
  • Information, education and resources
  • Early identification and support for healthy child growth and development
  • Support for positive parenting and parent-child relationships
  • Recommendation and referrals to community resources
 
Recreation Coordinator 
 
Responsible for planning, developing and implementing all social, recreational and special events for members of the community from school ages to elders. 
 
Coordinates and supervises a variety of programs including but not limited to: 
 
  • Adult volleyball nights
  • Game nights
  • Group fitness classes
  • Youth leadership workshops
 
Also, offer:
 
  • Gym use for private events
  • Structured and unstructured activities at the Community Hall during Professional Development (PD) days at school. 
 
Gymnasium Hours: 9:00 - 4:30 p.m. (HOURS MAY VARY)
