Heavy Equipment Operator Training

OETIO’s approach to heavy equipment operator training is to instruct our students in the skills of operating one specific piece of equipment at a time. We offer four separate programs including tractor-loader-backhoe, excavator, dozer and grader. We also offer each discipline in a Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Program
 
Our training standards:
 Meets the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU)  Apprenticeship Standards (www.edu.gov.on.ca) of 240 hours for heavy equipment operator training
• Each student will complete 78 hours (2 weeks) of in class theory
• Each student trains on their own piece of equipment for 162 hours of seat time
• Ratio:  1 instructor to a maximum of 6 students
• After hour tutoring 
• State-of-the-art simulation laboratory
• Introductory training on GPS and laser control systems  
• All  earthmoving instructors have a minimum 10+ years of operating experience
• Complies with the Canadian National Occupational Standards
• OETIO is an approved Training Delivery Agent  for MTCU and is registered as a Private Career College under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005


Tractor-Loader-Backhoe Program (TLB)

The tractor-loader backhoe (TLB) is one of the most widely used pieces of equipment in the construction industry. The front loader bucket is used to grade, level, excavate and move material. The back bucket digs trenches, performs excavations, levels and grades surfaces.
 
The TLB program at OETIO is 240 hours over 6 weeks and includes, classroom, laboratory activities and hands-on training with emphasis on practical operating skills on a tractor-loader-backhoe. Students will take the 2 week Fundamentals of Heavy Equipment followed by 4 weeks of practical field training.
 
 
Dozer Program

The dozer clears and prepares job sites, moves material, grades and levels surfaces. Used on housing projects, landscaping, new subdivisions, construction of large building projects, road work such as large highway projects, sewer and water main projects.

The dozer program at OETIO is 240 hours over 6 weeks and includes, classroom, laboratory activities and hands-on training with emphasis on practical operating skills on a dozer. Students will take the 2 week Fundamentals of Heavy Equipment followed by 4 weeks of practical field training.


Grader Program

The grader prepares surfaces from a rough grade to fine finishing, as well as, snow removal. Used in the construction and maintenance of roads, parking lots, and airport runways.
 
The grader program at OETIO is 240 hours over 6 weeks and includes, classroom, laboratory activities and hands-on training with emphasis on practical operating skills on a grader. Students will take the 2 week Fundamentals of Heavy Equipment followed by 4 weeks of practical field training.


Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Program

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) has apprenticeship programs for heavy equipment operators in Ontario. The apprenticeship programs includes both an in-school and an on-the-job component. 
 
Types of Heavy Equipment Apprenticeships
• Tractor Loader Backhoe (TLB) - 636A
• Excavator - 636B
• Bull-Dozer - 636C

Apprenticeship
• Each occupation is a 2,000 - 2,500 hour apprenticeship which includes 240 hours of in-school training

Apprenticeship with International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 793
• IUOE, Local 793 acts as a potential employer
• IUOE, Local 793 requires potential apprentices to be at least 18 years of age
• To have completed Ontario grade 12 or equivalent

To apply for an apprenticeship with IUOE, Local 793 you must submit a copy of:
• Your resume and/or application form
• Proof of an Ontario Grade 12 or equivalent and transcript
• Current driver's abstract
• Must write a trade entrance exam and achieve 70% or higher
