High Power Test Labs

Jul 14, 2020

Eaton's test labs perform a wide range of electrical tests including low- and medium-voltage current interruption, overload electrical and mechanical endurance, high current withstands, temperature rise, thermal calibration and magnetic calibration.

Tests are conducted per industry (UL, CSA, IEC, IEEE) or customer-supplied standards. Typical test samples include molded case circuit breakers, power circuit breakers, vacuum circuit breakers, contactors, low- and medium-voltage switchgear, bus duct, transformers and fuses.

Beaver High Power Lab

The Eaton Electrical Beaver High Power Laboratory (Beaver Lab) is a high power testing facility for the use of Eaton Electrical and outside clients.

The Beaver lab is capable of performing a wide range of electrical tests, including: current interruption, overload, endurance, withstands, temperature rise, thermal and magnetic calibration, vibration, and shock testing. Typical test samples include molded case circuit breakers, power breakers, contactors, low voltage switch gear, bus duct, fuses, etc.

The laboratory is located 35 miles north west of Pittsburgh in Beaver, Pennsylvania, and only 17 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport. A dedicated 69,000 Volt power line supplies the power for the lab. The Beaver Lab is organized into two sections: the High Power Laboratory and the Low Power Laboratory.

Belmont High Power Lab

The Belmont High Power Lab, located in Belmont, North Carolina, is a high power testing facility for the use of Eaton Electrical and outside clients. The Belmont Lab is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation.

The Eaton Electrical Belmont High Power Laboratory (Belmont Lab) is a high power testing facility for the use of Eaton Electrical and outside clients. The Belmont Lab is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing facility. The Belmont lab performs a wide range of electrical tests including current interruption tests (in the low and medium voltage ranges), overload electrical and mechanical endurance, high current withstands, temperature rise, thermal and magnetic calibration tests. Typical test samples include: molded case circuit breakers, power circuit breakers, vacuum circuit breakers, contactors, low and medium voltage switchgear, bus duct, fuses, etc.

The laboratory is located 4 miles south of Belmont, NC, approximately, 12 miles from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. A dedicated 104,000 Volt power line from one of the largest generating stations and distribution yards in the Duke Energy system is located less than one mile away and supplies power for the lab. The Belmont Lab is organized in two sections: the High Power Laboratory and the Low Power Laboratory.

Franksville Test Lab

Eaton’s Thomas A. Edison Technical Center is located in Franksville, Wisconsin. This 113,000 square foot facility is located on 135 acres of land in the southeast corner of the state, just south of the city of Milwaukee.

This facility is where our engineers and scientists test and develop the products and technology to transform and regulate power delivery in medium voltage power distribution systems. The focus is on high-voltage and high-power testing, materials development, and new product development for medium-voltage electrical distribution products.
  • Electrical labs: The 500 MVA motor generator, along with the 9 MVA direct-connect power capabilities at a satellite lab, allows Eaton to conduct regular high-power testing. Test capabilities include the high power lab with capacity up to 500 MVA, the high voltage labs with 1 MV impulse and 200 kV AC dielectric testing, and large scale powered environmental aging.
  • Materials development lab: Here, we conduct materials testing and accelerated aging simulations. Our technologists have years of expertise in dielectric materials, paints and coatings, polymers, metallurgical, thermal and environmental exposure. Many of these scientists and engineers also represent Eaton on industry standard committees and contribute their expertise toward updating electrical standards.
