Crane Apprenticeships in Ontario

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) governs the Hoisting Engineer apprenticeship programs for crane operators in Ontario. Hoisting Engineer is a compulsary trade.

All training programs for crane operators at the OETIO are designed to meet MTCU standards.

Mobile Crane Operator Branch 1 (339A) certification meets the Inter-provincial Red Seal standard. In order to enroll for training as a hoisting engineer at the OETIO you must first register as an apprentice with the MTCU in Ontario. There are three Hoisting Engineer certifications available:
• 339A - Mobile Crane Operator: 6,000 hour apprenticeship including 480 hours of in school training (4 levels).
• 339C - Mobile Crane Operator, up to and including 15 Tons: 1,000 hour apprenticeship including 240 hours of in school training (1 level).
• 339B - Tower Crane Operator: 3,000 hour apprenticeship including 360 hours of in school training (3 levels).


Mobile Crane Apprenticeship Programs

Mobile crane operator certifications are compulsory in Ontario. Ontario residents must be registered as an apprentice prior to taking any training.

OETIO is a Training Delivery Agent (TDA) approved by the Government of Ontario, Apprenticeship Division, to deliver in-school mobile crane operator apprenticeship training.

Mobile Crane Operator Branch 1 (339A)  is an Inter-provincial trade (Red Seal), which allows the operator the opportunity to work anywhere in Canada.

Training and benefits:
This program provides the fundamentals of safety, equipment characteristics, and operational practices that apply to mobile cranes. There is ample hands-on practice to develop the basic skills of mobile crane operation and maintenance.

The Branch 1 (339A;  8 ton - up to unlimited tonnage) apprenticeship requires common core and an additional 3 levels of in-school advanced training.

The Branch 2 (339C; 8 ton - up to and including 15 ton) apprenticeship requires only common core.

Note: Mobile and tower crane students both start their in-school training with the Level 1.


Tower Crane Apprenticeship Program

Tower crane operator certifications are compulsory in Ontario. Ontario residents must be registered as an apprentice prior to taking any training.

OETIO is a Training Delivery Agent (TDA) approved by the Government of Ontario, Apprenticeship Division to deliver the in-school tower crane operator apprenticeship training.

Training and benefits:
This program provides the fundamentals of safety, equipment characteristics, and operational practices that apply to tower cranes. Ample hands-on practice develops the basic skills of both hammerhead and luffing jib tower crane operation and maintenance.

The Branch 3 (339B) apprenticeship requires common core and an additional 2 levels of in-school advanced training.
