Insulation

Aug 19, 2015

Insulation is used to keep a given volume at a specific temperature; this is called thermal insulation. When used to avoid sound propagation, it is referred to as acoustic insulation.

Thermal insulation decreases heat transfer between cold and warm bodies. It keeps heat within a given volume, such as a house, but can also retain cold within a volume as in the case of a refrigerator. Insulation is achieved by interposing insulating materials between hot and cold areas, or by establishing a flow of air between them.

Acoustic insulation prevents the propagation of sound, which travels in vibrations. Rock wool, glass wool, hemp and cellulose are all acoustic insulation materials that act as buffers to absorb sound.
