Environmental Monitoring

Field Program

While currently on hold due to COVID-19, GGM’s field work plans for 2020 may include flow station monitoring, surface water and ground water sampling. With the guidance of GGM, this fieldwork is completed by the Indigenous Environmental Monitors. Here’s a brief explanation on how GGM collects data on water quality. There are currently 15 flow stations in the project area, that are regularly accessed for data collection. Some stations contain leveloggers that continuously measure water temperature and pressure (used to determine the water level). Some flow station locations are manually measured to calculate total flow within the waterbody. At regularly scheduled intervals, surface water monitoring is conducted at 14 locations around/or on Kenogamisis Lake. Samples collected record data such as; temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity. Groundwater samples are collected from 12 groundwater wells and sent to the lab for analysis.

Introducing our Community Development  Liaison

Rachel Wallis

We are pleased to introduce Rachel Wallis to the GGM team. Rachel was hired as the Community Development Liaison and has worked in the environmental regulatory field with a focus on Indigenous relations since 2007. In her role, Rachel will focus on building meaningful relationships with local indigenous communities. In February, Rachel relocated from Calgary and in the past has worked on remote projects; transmission lines, pipeline, oilsand facilities and infrastructure across Alberta and BC.

Rachel enjoys meeting community members while she walks her dogs Rocco and Waylon. She’s an avid gardener and
has a keen interest in sustainable living such as canning and preserving. As a provincially licensed beekeeper, Rachel looks forward to sharing her knowledge with others. While in Greenstone, Rachel greatly anticipates learning how to hunt and fish, northern-style.
