Determine the Vibration Severity of a Hammer Impact

Mar 4, 2014
Hand arm vibration is of increasing concern to users of hammers. There have long been standards governing the permissible level of vibration for continuously vibrating tools. Determining the damage from vibration levels from impact tools is a greater challenge.

A technique for measuring the vibration severity of a given impact for hammers has been developed. This technique measures the vibration on the hammer handle for a given impact force. This vibration is then transformed into a vibration severity index, using principles consistent with ISO5349. In addition, the technique determines the first bending frequency of the hammer handle.

Using this technique, it is easy to compare the vibration severity of different hammers. In addition, during the design phase, different design iterations of the hammer design can be compared to determine the optimun design.
