Keewaytinook Internet High School

Feb 10, 2021

Keewaytinook Internet High School has been delivering acredited high school courses for over 10 years through our online education platform with certified teachers in each of the 13 First Nation classrooms. The vision of the chiefs was to provide an opportunity for high school students to stay connected to their families, culture and the land by completing courses with same quality of education as urban schools. Students receive their curriculum online and complete courses with the mentorship and support of their qualified classroom teacher. In order to provide cultural learning, traditional teachings are infused into ministry approved curriculum including learning on the land with Elders and flexibility for students to practice their traditional activities.

History of KiHS

Keewaytinook Internet High School began in 1999 at the request of Keewaytinook Okimakanak (Northern Chiefs Tribal Council.) The Chiefs of KO were responding to a need from parents and students to allow young people to receive high school education without having to leave their home communities. KiHS began as a pilot project for grade 9 students. In the first few years, only a handful of applied junior level courses were offered to a small number of communities, but over the next decade and more, KiHS has grown to include partnerships with 15 communities.

Course offerings range from grade 9 to grade 12, in all streams (locally developed, applied, academic, workplace, college, or university preparation), and in all subject areas (English, math, science, native language, arts, technology, business, co-op, phys ed, humanities, Canadian and World studies). We also introduced some College level curriculum through our partnership with Cisco Systems. Cisco Online Academy offers computer and network based training for a variety of skill levels, from the beginner to the advanced engineer level network analyst. If you are interested in any of these areas, come to KIHS and see what the future has in store for you.

Future with KiHS

KiHS is moving in a very positive direction as we plan and develop courses to meet the needs of the students we are working with in terms of academic programming, mature student assessments, special education and many more. KiHS is into its 21st year of operation and the success has been continuing in the positive direction since the start. With KiHS it is not just possible to obtain your OSSD, but also possible to gain the requirements to enter many jobs in the workforce and many college and university programs. Not many schools in northwestern Ontario can make the same claim. Our dedicated teachers are with your students every day in your communities, helping to guide them through towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and to the opportunities that await them in the future.
