Lands and Resources

The Lands and Resources Department is Wahgoshig’s front line of protection of the land, as well as its inherent and treaty rights. It ensures the good health of the land and will safeguard Wahgoshig’s ability to exercise its inherent and treaty rights, and to maintain a close relationship with the land now and for future generations.

 

The Lands and Resources Department monitors land use by engaging with resource developers in its traditional territory and requires the Crown to fulfill its duty to consult when considering any decision that may impact the inherent and treaty rights of Wahgoshig. International law requires a First Nation’s Free Prior Informed Consent before any action that would impact its traditional lands can occur. Wahgoshig supports this law. The federal and provincial Crown has a constitutional duty to consult with and accommodate Wahgoshig when it contemplates a decision or action that may affect Wahgoshig’s Rights. 

 

Lands and Resources monitors land use in Wahgoshig’s traditional territory to ensure that any development is environmentally responsible and respectful of Wahgoshig’s treaty and aboriginal rights. It also maintains data on Wahgoshig’s historic and present land use through collaboration with archaeologists and by recording oral history.
