Mature Students

If you are 19 years or older by the beginning of classes, but have not yet completed your high school diploma, you will be considered a "mature student."

Submit your application and any relevant high school transcripts to ontariocolleges.ca (additional testing or upgrading may be necessary for you to meet program admission requirements).

THE CANADIAN ADULT ACHIEVEMENT TEST (CAAT)

The Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) is an assessment used for mature students who are 19 years of age or older and who do not possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

You will be tested in Math and English to an OSSD equivalent for the purposes of entering a college program. For programs requiring senior Math, additional testing is also provided.

Purpose

This test determines if you are eligible for direct entry into your college program of interest.

The test helps to ensure that you have adequate academic skills to successfully participate in and complete your program.
If the assessment indicates that you are not eligible for direct entry, you can enroll in academic upgrading courses.
In this instance, the results of your test will help your student advisor develop a training plan with you, to begin instruction at an appropriate level of learning.

What's on the Test?

Depending on your program of interest, the test will cover skills in English and Math, and includes a sample of your writing.

The test takes between three to four hours to complete.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Attend an Information Session

Information Sessions about the Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) are offered frequently at our Peterborough, Lindsay and Cobourg campuses.

These sessions cover:

How the test is administered and what is required for you to obtain direct entry to college.
You will receive a preparation booklet with samples of the types of questions on the test.
The session also includes information on our Academic Upgrading program, including the Academic and Career Entrance Certificate, with courses available on a full-time or part-time basis, to suit your schedule.
How to register for your test date.
Orientation to the college and its programs.

Take the CAAT Test

You can take the test at any of our four campuses, in Cobourg, Haliburton, Lindsay or Peterborough.

Receive Acknowledgement

You will be contacted by mail or by telephone (depending upon where you took the test) with details on whether your CAAT score indicates direct entry.

If your test score indicates that you require preparatory courses before entry to college, an appointment can be arranged with the Academic Upgrading co-ordinator at the campus located nearest to you. Usually, these courses are offered starting every month, although dates may vary depending on demand.

If you have a disability that may affect your performance on the test, accommodations can be made.
If you are from out of town, and cannot attend an information session or a test session, the test can be mailed to a proctor in your home town. This proctor should be employed at an educational institution, such as a high school, college, or university.

SECOND CAREER APPLICANTS

If it is determined that the student does not meet the admissions requirements, they may need academic upgrading. A fee will apply for Academic Upgrading completed at Fleming College. This cost will be determined by the training plan created by the A/U department based on the current rate and number of weeks/hours estimated to complete the requirement. Please follow the process below:

Once the assessment is completed a training plan will be provided to take to your Employment Counsellor

If the Employment Counsellor would like to discuss or proceed with the plan, contact the Academic Upgrading office to request a quote of the expected fees. We will ensure the training plan is current and/or reflects any changes requested by the Employment Counsellor

The quotation of fees will be sent by Fleming's Second Career office directly to the Employment Counsellor. Approval of funding is required prior to commencing with the training plan. If you proceed with the training plan without MAESD approval you are responsible for the fees applied to your account

If the funding is approved by the MAESD, please contact the Second Career office x 1503 to advise. You will be required to bring the full contract to the admissions office
