The National Mining Society Foundation is a non-profit entity and whose legal personality was granted by Decree No. 590 of June 30, 2000, from the Ministry of Justice. In accordance with its statutes, the Foundation guides its work towards the fulfillment of the following foundational objectives:

  • Develop occupational and labor training actions and the preparation of people for work activities in all aspects that this involves, including the selection of personnel.
  • Fulfill tasks of promotion, development and improvement of the country's education and collaborate with the State, the municipalities and any other entity in the teaching, research, extension and culture functions that these institutions carry out.
  • Promote research, development and dissemination of culture and art, with the purpose of directly contributing to improving the quality of life of the community as a whole.

In a board meeting held on May 27, 2017, the Board of the Foundation underwent a change in its composition, with Diego Hernández Cabrera and Alejandro Vásquez Salgado joining as new members, replacing Patricio Céspedes Guzmán and Francisco Veloso Barraza. On the occasion, Diego Hernández Cabrera, Hernán Guiloff Izikson and Alejandro Vázquez Salgado were elected, in the positions of president, treasurer and secretary respectively.

HIGHER STUDY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
 
The SONAMI Foundation Scholarship Program is an institutional initiative aimed at encouraging and supporting children of small producers, members of the Mining Associations that are members of the National Mining Society FG, and children of their workers, to ensure the continuation of higher studies in industry-related professions.
 
The scholarship is awarded annually to young people who are studying careers at the technical and professional levels. It consists of an annual contribution of UF 40, financial resources that are preferably used to cover the payment of the course fee. As a requirement, applicants must have completed their secondary studies in any of the modalities of secondary education with an average academic performance of grade equal to or greater than six. In those cases where the applicant is already pursuing higher education or requests to renew the benefit, accredit a cumulative grade point average of more than five point five.
 
 
MINERA WOMAN SCHOLARSHIP
 
The “Beca Mujer Minera” is a support program created by the SONAMI Foundation in 2011, with the purpose of promoting the incorporation of professional women into the national mining industry. This scholarship currently consists of an economic contribution equivalent to 50% of the value of the annual fee for the Civil Engineering in Mines program, issued by the Department of Mining Engineering of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile. 
This benefit is granted to those students in Civil Engineering who choose the specialty of mines, at the end of the Common Plan cycle, and considers academic performance, family socioeconomic status and personal skills measured through an assessment as elements of evaluation. interview. For the evaluation of these aspects, the academic history that includes the courses taken, grades and passing rates, the Socioeconomic Report prepared by the Department of Student Welfare of the Faculty of Cs. Physics and Mathematics from the University of Chile, and the personal interview that seeks to evaluate aspects of communication, vision of mining, commitment, and personal motivation for the career.
 
 
CULTURE
 
With the contribution of the National Mining Society, through its subsidiary El Trovador SA and acceptance of the benefits of the Cultural Donations Law, the Sixteenth Concert Season of the SONAMI Foundation was held in the Atacama Region. As in previous years, the Season included various presentations by the Atacama Regional Philharmonic Orchestra (OFRA) and guest artists. This musical group, as well as the Orquesta Jóvenes Atacameños, are led by maestro Rodrigo Salas Gamboa, a musician with a long history and teaching work.
 
The XVI Concert Season added a total of thirteen presentations open to the community, held in different cities and towns in the Atacama Region, between the months of January and July 2017. The concerts were held at different locations including the Cathedral , the Commercial Institute, the Normal School and the Culture Center of Copiapó, the Station Cultural Center and the Church San Vicente de Paul de Caldera, and the Chapel Santa Elena de Domeyko.
 
 
In each of the concerts, the Atacama Regional Philharmonic Orchestra provided a wide variety of musical works by classical and contemporary authors, in different formats including the families of stringed instruments, winds, and percussion. During the Season, the Atacama Regional Philharmonic Orchestra accompanied Chilean musicians Sebastián Acevedo (violin) and Erick Delgado (clarinet), and foreign concertists Enrique Tellería (bandoneon) and Julija Botchskovkaia (piano).
 
Enrique Tillería, concert player and bandoneon arranger of Uruguayan origin performed together with OFRA a selection of works of classical origin, traditional tango, jazz tango and new tango by European and Argentine composers. The master Tillería has an outstanding international career in Latin America and Europe, collaborating with prominent musical groups belonging to various European cities.
 
Julija Botchkovskaia, a Ukrainian concert pianist with a long international career, performed with OFRA at the Cultural Center of the IM in Copiapó, on July 27, 2017, on which occasion she performed Sonata Para Piano En C Mayor N ° 3 Op.2 and Concerto No. 3 for piano and orchestra, in C Menor Op.37 by Ludwig Van Beethoven, with an audience of more than six hundred and fifty people. This outstanding pianist also performed at the Gabriela Mistral – GAM Cultural Center in Santiago on July 29, 2017, an opportunity in which she performed a selection of works by classical composers such as Handel, Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Mendelssohn. Both concerts had the support of the Technological University of Chile - INACAP.
 
 
OFRA and its director continued the formative work with the Diego de Almagro Youth Orchestra, a group that had outstanding presentations showing its young members a great sensitivity for music. Additionally, the Atacama Regional Philharmonic Orchestra gave concerts in the framework of institutional celebrations of the Commercial Institute of Copiapó and in the celebration of the 112th Anniversary of the Normal School of Copiapó.
 
In its seventeen versions, it is estimated that the Concert Seasons have brought together more than 45,000 attendees who reside in different cities and towns in the Atacama Region. In this way, the SONAMI Foundation together with the Atacama Regional Philharmonic Orchestra fulfills the purpose of spreading and promoting musical art in this important mining region of Chile.
 
 
DIFFUSION
 
TALKS TO DELEGATIONS OF UNIVERSITIES
 
As part of the dissemination work carried out by the SONAMI Foundation on Chilean mining, visits are regularly received from delegations of undergraduate and graduate students from foreign universities, particularly from the United States, who visit the country. These visits are part of the study program and aim to acquire knowledge and experience in relation to the social, political and economic context of other countries.
 
In the context of the visit to Chile, the delegations have the opportunity to attend a talk that addresses topics of interest related to the relevance of the local mining industry, its production processes, environmental aspects and socio-economic impact for the country.
