Our history
The history of Cooper
Since 1972, Cooper Equipment Rentals had been dedicated to servicing contractors across Canada. We’ve come a long way since then, thanks to both our team’s dedication and your support. Starting as a single branch operation, we have now grown to over 40 branches across Canada.
1972
Gordon Cooper starts G. Cooper Equipment Rentals with his partner, Paul Carruthers (Carruthers Construction), in a small shed on Markham Road N of Steels Ave.
1973
Cooper moves to their own building with 2 acres of yard space on Markham Road North of Steels Ave.
1977
G. Cooper Equipment Rentals opens a second branch in Mississauga.
1982
G. Cooper Equipment Rentals continues to expand by opening another branch in Georgetown, Ontario.
1999
Cooper moves their head office location and opens branch operations in Rexdale on Racine Road.
2003
Gord Cooper retires as President, and his son, Darryl Cooper, takes over operations.
2010
Doug Dougherty joins Cooper Equipment as President and Darryl Cooper becomes CEO.
2013
Cooper formalizes “The Cooper Difference” as an internal value system and rolls it out to all employees.
2013
Cooper opens 4th location in the York Region and acquires City Rentals to expand into Scarborough.
2014
Cooper acquires Albion Equipment Rentals to expand into Bolton.
2015
Cooper acquires SMS Rents, bringing total branches to 22 across Ontario with an expansion into the Quebec market.
2017
Cooper acquires assets of 4-Way Equipment Rentals, its first step into expanding operations into Western Canada.
2017
Cooper acquires Alberta Lift to expand into Calgary and Lethbridge.
2017
Cooper opens an additional rental location in West Edmonton, bringing their branch network to 4 across Alberta.
2018
Cooper acquires Modern Industrial Rentals, expanding their branch network into Medicine Hat and opening a second branch location in Calgary.
2019
Cooper acquires Star Rentals, expanding their services in the Metro Vancouver area in White Rock, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Burnaby.
2019
Cooper acquires Prime Rentals, adding two more branches in Alberta with a location in Taber and a second location in Lethbridge.
