Cambrian Athletes Inducted into Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame

Sep 30, 2013
Outstanding accomplishments by Cambrian Golden Shield athletes have been memorialized in local history thanks to the House of Kin Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame.

Members of Cambrian’s national-championship winning 1997 Men’s Hockey Team were happily reunited at the 45th Annual Sports Celebrity Dinner, which was held in June at the Caruso Club.  Their 3-2 victory over the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology followed an undefeated season, and was Cambrian’s first and only Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) hockey crown.

At the same event, the 2012-13 women’s varsity volleyball team was honoured with the Sheridan Family Team of the Year award. The team earned a bronze medal at the provincial championships and finished the season with a 17-3 record. Veteran Shawna Metcalf was inducted into the Hall of Fame as Amateur Female Athlete of the Year after breaking records for career kills and points. She holds the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association record for 270 kills in a single season and set two new provincial career records with 960 kills and 1,239 points.

Other nominees for this year’s awards included women’s volleyball coach Dale Beausoleil, who was nominated for the Joe Drago Coach of the Year Award, and volleyball player Jillian Shell, who was nominated alongside Metcalf for Amateur Female Athlete of the Year.

Cambrian congratulates all of the athletes and coaches on their 2012-13 season results and is looking forward to supporting the Golden Shield as the 2013-14 season gears up!
