The Port of Thunder Bay is a hub for dimensional and heavy-lift project cargo shipments for destinations in Western Canada. Advantages of shipping through the Port of Thunder Bay:

Facilities
Shippers benefit from the port’s competitive, value-added services and facilities. Project and general cargo shipments are handled at Keefer Terminal, a sprawling 32-hectare facility:
- Direct access to Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways, as well as the TransCanada Highway and U.S. highways
- Liebherr LHM 320 mobile harbour crane
- On-dock rail and intermodal yard with 200-car marshalling yard
- 17 acres of granular and paved laydown area with room for expansion
- Indoor space totals 50,000 square meters (550,000 sq. ft.)
- Heated space is available

Expansion and Reconfiguration
The Port of Thunder Bay is dedicated to providing high-value service for every shipment.
In 2018, the Port began a $15 million terminal reconfiguration project that will see the development of additional heated warehouse space, new granular laydown area, upgraded rail track and increased railcar spots. Anticipated completion of the project is 2020.

Backhaul Cargo
An added benefit to the shipper is the availability of bulk cargo as backhaul to foreign or domestic ports. Thunder Bay is the largest outbound port on the Seaway, offering grain, coal and potash from Western Canada for export.
The Port ships 7.5 million tonnes of grain annually to destinations around the world.
