Reclamation

Jul 16, 2014
The Engineers developing the reclamation plan require the original topographical and orthophoto map and the final map of the mine site after closure.

With the difference in the topography of the 2 maps, they can see where the property requires excavation and landfill in order to bring the property back to its original state.

Mining companies must prepare a mine reclamation plan before they start developing a new mine. The base topographical and orthophoto map will be a permanent record of the land before the development.

After the deposit has been mined out, a final topographical map is prepared. The reclamation is carried out to bring the property as close as possible to its original state before the mine was created.

It is usually necessary to fly aerial photography over a mine site once the restoration has been completed. This provides proof of compliance to governments and regulatory bodies.

LiDAR Applications

Because LiDAR data provides extremely accurate georeferenced information it can be used to exactly determine:
• What the terrain looked like before the mine was developed
• Where the ground changed during the life of the mine
• The areas that need to be excavated or filled in order to bring the land back to its original state

PHOTO applications

• Accurate orthophoto maps can be used to determine a variety of factors that require pictorial references. They include:
• How the raw land looked before the mine was developed.
• Identifying what flora and fauna was present and where the original species would need to be planted
• An excelling visual for town meeting and planning committees to show what the impact of the mine will be and how the site will look after the mine has been reclaimed.
• Proof of compliance with restoration requirements
