Reverse Trade Show

Jul 26, 2020
In its 2018/19 budget delivered on 1 March 2018, the Government of Yukon declared that it "needs to get out of the business of business." The Yukon government further noted that "there are opportunities to consider how our government can stop doing work that elsewhere in Canada is done by the private sector." The budget also stated that "Yukon’s vibrant business sector is a source of innovation and expertise." Between October 19 and November 4th, 2018, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce surveyed the Yukon business community to help inform the Government of Yukon how it can "get out of the business of business". In total 24 individuals completed the survey.

Respondents

Most respondents are from the private sector (n=18), followed by non-profit associations (n=5), and one respondent worked for the government. 16 respondents are shareholder/owner and 8 are manager/executive.

Good and Services that could be provided by the private sector

Examples: grading, snow removal, facility maintenance, liquor & cannabis retail, project development & management, tourism marketing, physiotherapy, web-based survey, training & advisory services, etc.

Examples: Road and highway maintenance, land development, cannabis & liquor retail, IT support, publishing, photocopying, car fleet services, marketing, tourist information & advisory services, travel booking, long-term care, some physical and mental health care services.

Kind of expertise & innovation respondents could provide that is not currently offered by the Government of Yukon:

• Expertise in specific retail sectors such as cannabis
• Expertise on specific Yukon communities & First Nations culture tours and information tailored
accordingly
• Research and development on renewable/alternative energy
• Expertise in data formatting, analysis and visualization
• Waste management and reduction
• Digital/multimedia
• Content marketing
• Expertise in specific techniques/treatments (health services); alternative/innovative services
• Workshops/training provided by knowledgeable individuals

Comments

• With limited opportunities to secure larger contracts, Yukon companies are not provided with prospects
to evolve/grow/expand. Canadian companies that bid on YG contracts have no incentive to partner or
work with any Yukon companies or labour.
• Support and promote local artists and First Nation tourism in communities. Dawson model could be
applied to other communities.
• The current level of funding is not sustainable; the Government of Yukon should stop depending on
transfer payments.
