Fleming students win top awards in the province at Skills Ontario Competition

May 14, 2021

Fleming College Culinary Management student Liam Collin

Peterborough ON – (May 14, 2021) – Fleming student Liam Collin in the Culinary Management program has won the gold medal in the Skills Ontario Competition. He will now represent Fleming and Ontario in culinary arts at the Skills Canada National Competition.

All Fleming students who participated in this year’s event placed in the top three in the province. The other Fleming medalists are:

  • Liliane Michaud won silver in culinary arts
  • Bailey Wodzack won silver in carpentry
  • Nicholas Stock won bronze in welding
  • Devin Cartmell-Martin won bronze in metal fabrication-fitter

The mission of Skills Ontario is to champion and stimulate the development of world-class technological and employability skills in Ontario youth. The Skills Ontario Competition is an annual event for top students in the province to match their skills against others and compete for prizes. During their presentation, participants demonstrate the skills learned in their programs to impress the judges, educators, family and friends, and even prospective employers.

In addition to an opportunity to have fun and grow the professional network, the event showcases high-achieving students from colleges across Ontario and the winners then meet the best from each province and territory at the national stage. Fleming has a list of students who have performed well in previous years, and many Ontario medalists have gone on to join international events, television shows and competitions, senior management positions in various organizations across Canada, and become business owners and instructors.

Due to the pandemic restrictions and safety protocols, teachers and students had to continually adapt over the past year. Classes were transitioned to online, schedules were rearranged, and labs were outfitted with computer stations for video streaming. Overcoming all that shows Fleming students are ready to tackle any challenge in the future. Congratulations to all the winners and participants of this year’s Skill Ontario Competition.
