Ontario Works
 
The Social Services / Ontario Works office can provide assistance to Tyendinaga community members on program information and requirements, assess eligibility and assist in preparing applications, create a participation agreement, identify financial benefits, and provide family support services.
 
Financial assistance includes:
 
  • Basic assistance for accommodation costs, food and clothing as determined by actual shelter costs and family size.
  • Coverage of most prescription medication. Basic dental coverage for children, and emergency dental coverage for adults.  Prescription eyeglasses for children as required and for adults once every three years.
  • Other special benefits may include medical expenses, surgical and diabetic supplies, employment related expenses, funds to establish a permanent residence, funding to pay for rental arrears, utility disconnections, and repairs to your home.

Employment Services
Self-Development Workshops to increase confidence, self esteem, and to focus on self-development that may lead to the removal of barriers to employment. 
 
Supports for Education and Training – some training allowances are exempt under OW as income to allow  the continuation of the support of OW while  further education or training is pursued to increase success rate. 
 
Employment Benefits – benefits are available to OW recipients to assist with work clothing/equipment, transportation, licensing fees, etc. 
 
Soft Skills Training – workshops are offered to improve communications, problem solving, time management, interpersonal skills, work ethic, etc. Some skill specific training is available (forklift operator training, WHMIS, CPR/EFA, G1 drivers license support, fall arrest certification, etc)
 
Other services – child care subsidies, transportation fees, medical transportation, and referrals to appropriate programs or agenices.

We provide a safe and secure wholistic healing experience, through community minded practices that incorporates Indigenous knowledge and teachings to encourage a balanced peaceful life free of abuse.
 
We, as a community shelter affirm respect for our roles as Onkwehonwe women, men and children and uphold the principles of the centrality of the family within our society. Recognizing the existence of abuse, we accept the responsibility to help victims in times of crisis to provide; shelter, support, and counselling during this period of transition.

Enyonkwa'nikonhriyo:hake (Good Minds)
 
The Enyonkwa’nikonhriyo:hake Program will build safety, encourage and promote wellness through practicing: Peace, inclusiveness, and respect inspired by our cultural beliefs, values and teachings.
 
The Good Minds Program ensures that MBQ is able to deliver counselling services, youth programming, circles (groups), grief recovery, ceremonies, elder support, addictions counselling, Child & Youth Wellness, and NNADAP prevention programming. Our goal is to build linkages and relationships with on and off Territory agencies to provide services of utmost quality.

Service Descriptions

Provides holistic services through the following program areas:

  1. Good Minds– Oversees the programs to ensure  the services being provided are offered in a holistic manner that best suit the needs of our community, provides counseling, cultural activities and supports. We are building our capacity to better meet the needs of the community.
  2. Traditional Community Wellness Program– Provides counseling services to Tyendinaga Mohawk community members on or off territory or any Indigenous person requesting services. This is done through one-on-one counseling, circles, grief recovery, workshops and information sessions.
  3. National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program(NNADAP)- Provides prevention, intervention, aftercare and follow-up services. To increase community awareness regarding the negative effects of alcohol, drugs and solvent abuse. This is done through speaking engagements at schools, workshops, and community based activities. Teaching our youth a healthier lifestyle, because they are our future. Doing one-on-one counseling, circles, grief recovery, workshops, and information sessions.
  4. Youth Program– Overall purpose is to improve the wellbeing of and access to culturally appropriate holistic and community directed good minds, children development and recreational activities at the community level.
  5. Child & Youth Wellness Program– The primary focus of the Child & Youth Wellness Team is to ensure that all First Nations’ children and youth, up to the age of 18, receive the required supports and holistic care via counselling and referrals to increase their overall well-being.
 
Programs & Services
 
Traditional Community Wellness Program
 
The purpose of the Traditional Community Wellness Program is to provide counseling services to Tyendinaga Mohawk Community members on or off Territory, and any Indigenous person requesting services.
 
Our goal is to assist community members in understanding and processing feelings as well as take ownership of their feelings; teachings of the unburdening process; the effects of trauma and the impacts of residential schools and family violence.
 
We will support each individual as they journey through the healing process. We believe in supporting the whole human being, emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually.
 
Services
 
We offer circle (groups), an unburdening process; organize and offer ceremonies; organize community workshops and/or information sessions as well as speaking engagements.
 
  • Provide one-on-one counseling sessions, circles (groups) such as grief recovery, woman’s, men’s, healing, talking, sharing, etc.
  • Organize and offer ceremonies; these can vary and are offered throughout the year.
  • Fasting camps are held 2 times a year (spring/fall)
  • Moon Ceremony is held every month
  • Sweats at various times throughout the year, as requested
  • Organize community workshops and/or information sessions as well as speaking engagements. We speak on a variety of topics from cross cultural training, family violence, trauma, lateral violence, etc.
  • Advocacy and referrals to appropriate services
 
National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP)
 
NNADAP provides prevention, intervention, aftercare and follow-up services. Prevention strategies conducted by the program provide culturally appropriate programs to educate and create awareness about addictions and addiction free-lifestyles.
 
Intervention strategies provide assessments and referrals to treatment centres, preparation of clients for entry to treatments centres or rehabilitation treatment programs. Strategies also include short-term counseling in crisis situations and out-patient counseling services.
 
After care and follow up services also provide support to clients returning home or to their community from treatment and provide ongoing client care.
 
Objective:
 
  • Reduce the incidence of alcohol and drugs
  • Build capacity to develop and deliver culturally appropriate community based addictions programs and services.
  • Increase awareness and understanding concerning alcohol and drugs to the community at large.
  • To promote a holistic approach to deal with healing and wellness.
  • To provide support circles, one-on-one counseling, workshops, education sessions, etc.
  • Strengthen relationships between community-based programs
  • Provide support to individuals and family post-treatment
  • Provide a short-term counseling to address crisis and outpatient counseling services.
 
Youth Program
 
Our youth programs provide culturally appropriate activities at the community level to help create healthy families and community environments in which community members and children can thrive. We hold theme dances, educate on Mohawk culture, sports, workshops such as self-esteem, identity & land skills and other ongoing activities dedicated to youth. We have a drop in centre located in the Youth Centre at the Karonhyak’tatye Sports Complex. We also fund before and after school age programs.
 
Objective:
 
  • Increase the awareness in using the good mind, child development and healthy habits.
  • Role model healthy lifestyles and healthy relationships
  • Provide circles such as grief recovery, girls circle & boys circle
  • Support community development and provide opportunity for communities to find their own solutions to the health and development needs of children, youth, family and community.
  • Support optimal health and social development

The program provides Youth Groups at the Youth Centre on the following nights:

  • Ages 6-8 yrs Tuesday 6 pm-8 pm
  • Ages 13 yrs+ Wednesday 6 pm-8 pm
  • Ages 9-12 yrs Thursdays 6 pm-8 pm
 
Children's Mental Health Program
 
The primary focus of the Child & Youth Wellness Team is to ensure that all First Nations’ children and youth, up to the age of 18, receive supports and holistic care, necessary to increase their well-being. Our area covers First Nation Children and Youth in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Hastings and Prince Edward, Lennox & Addington, Frontenac, Leeds & Grenville and Lanark Counties.
 
The program will provide culturally appropriate programs to educate, create awareness, and increase supports.

Family Health & Child Development
 
Our program provides services to families that reside on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, being mindful of culture and language when developing programming.
Family Health and Child Development services are open to everyone, with a target group of  children ages 0-6.
 
We are funded by Health Canada, Ministry of Children & Youth Services, and Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians

Home Visiting Services
 
Our goal during a home visit is to provide parents, caregivers, and their families with support, and information to help children get a healthy start in life. During a home visit we also focus on the developmental tasks of children ages 0-6. Family Health and Child Development is a voluntary program available to families with children that reside in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Clients must receive a minimum of 1 home visit per month.
 
At a home visit these are the things we offer:
 
  • assistance with birth plans
  • taking care of yourself and your baby before and after your baby arrives
  • what to expect as your child grows and develops, and fun ways to help your child’s development
  • provide development screening tools
  • bonding with your child
  • any issues you may have and providing you with the supports you will need
  • healthy eating habits for you and your family
  • helping with sibling rivalry

The Family Well-Being Program works with Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte families, programs and service providers in order to support, advocate, assist and/or co-ordinate to provide support in a variety of ways.

Food Resource Centre
 
We believe that access to nutritious food is a basic human right. We are committed to responding to the needs of our community through food distribution and support services. Therefore, We value respect, compassion and honesty in all interactions and activities.
 
In an effort to meet the needs of our community members the Food Resource center was created to make a more accessible solution for those in need. Community members are given access once bi-weekly (every 14 days) and must reside on the Territory.
 
The Food Resource Centre is located in the Community Wellbeing Centre at 50 Meadow Drive for your convenience.
 
Indigenous Victim Services
 
Indigenous Victim Services of Tyendinaga offers 24 Hour Crisis Response, Cultural Healing, Safety Planning, Support, Advocacy, and Referrals for Ongoing Care to residents of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and First Nations, Inuit, or Metis residents of the surrounding communities.
 
IVS is a volunteer-driven Community Wellbeing Program of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, originally funded in 2018 in order to provide after-hours emergency crisis support and advocacy to the community. Funded through the Ministry of the Attorney General and the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, IVS works closely with Victims Services and Victim Witness programs of Hastings County, Napanee, and Kingston, as well other mainstream services such as the Quinte Coordinating Committee Against Violence, the Ontario Provincial Police Sexual Assault Regional Collaborative Review Committee, and all services provided by Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.

Mohawk Family Services
 
Mohawk Family Services is a prevention program created to help protect the children of our community; to provide support to families, with the goal of keeping families together, wherever possible; and to nurture and instill the traditional values of Mohawk People in our relationship with the child and family.
 
EARLY INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION
 
Mohawk Family Services is a prevention program involving early intervention and support for families in need. The goal is to reduce the need for protection services and to reduce the need for children to be placed outside their family home. Children and families who are in need of assistance and support with all aspects of family life can call for help.

PROTECTION & PLACEMENT
 
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and Mohawk Family Services have a Memorandum of Understanding with Highland Shores Children’s Aid. They recognize the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte’s right to support and provide service when their members are involved with the Child Protection system. The goal is always to provide the most support with the least intrusion possible.

Our staff also provides assistance for children and families who are not involved in the Child Protection system, by:
  • Offering one to one and family support-help through difficult emotional and physical situations
  • Parenting support and support with difficult ages and stages of development
  • Support with educational issues
  • Home visits– including help with keeping the home environment clean and safe
  • Support at community events and in times of community need
  • Providing referrals to other Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte programs
  • Providing referrals to off Territory programs, depending on client need
 
Early Intervention Prevention
 
Preventative help is provided through a variety of ways, including:
  • One on one and family support
  • Crisis response-24 hour response to Crisis calls
  • Family Group Conferencing
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Training, education & referral (parenting, behaviour management)
  • Home visits
  • Advocacy and referral on behalf of the clients’ needs
  • Community events for families to attend
  • Yearly events for children i.e Youth Awards, Children’s Shopping Day
 
Protection and Placement
 
Protection services are still required sometimes, and so, along with Frontenac Lennox and Addington Children Aid and Highland Shores Children’s Aid, Mohawk Family Services provides the following services:
  • Court support for Child Protection proceedings
  • Attendance and family support in Child Protection investigations
  • Offering alternative placement options for children
