The Six Nations of the Grand River Social Services Department is mandated to serve our Nation by providing assistance in a non-adversarial, cooperative manner, which draws upon, supports and strengthens the family- based obligations and traditions of caring, sharing, mutual respect, healing and harmony that are rooted in and inseparable from our culture. 
 
The Social Services Department consists of: Social Services Administration, Six Nations Child and Family Services, Six Nations Child Care Services and Six Nations Grand River Correctional Services
 
Youth In Transition
 
Social Servies is now operating a new Youth in Transition Program. This program is designed to help First Nation, Metis or Inuit Youth between the ages of 16-24 transition out of the child welfare system into adulthood.
 
Marsha Reany, Youth in Transition Worker assists and supports youth in identifying, developing and implementing an individual plan based on their individual goals. As well as provides guidance and emotional support to access and navigate through the adult system.
 
Marsha advocates for youth and assists in accessing programs such as:
 
  • Assistance in finding housing
  • Education opportunities
  • Employment services and training
  • Connection cultural knowledge and activities
  • Life skills training (financial and household management)
  • Health services
  • Addictions and mental health
  • Legal services
  • Other social and community supports
 
Child & Family Services
 
Six Nations of the Grand River Child & Family Services is a Native Child Welfare Prevention program, located at 15 Sunrise Court (across from Iroquois Plaza, just off Chiefswood Road). We offer individual, couple, family and group counseling, as well as a variety of social, recreational and leisure programs and seasonal special events.
 
Who is Eligible?
Children (0-18 yrs) and their families whom reside on Six Nations Grand River Territory and registered Band members residing off-reserve for less than one year.
 
How to Access Service?
Services are accessed through our Service Coordination Unit (519) 445-0230 Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the exception of Community Support/Resource Development functions and programs.

Service Coordination
 
This unit performs the duty of case manager for all incoming clients seeking services at Six Nations Child & Family Services. Responsibilities include:
 
  • Client intake; interviews
  • Information gathering
  • Coordinating and monitoring service plans
  • Coordinates services for clients
  • Client advocacy if applicable
  • Referrals
 
Child Care Services
 
Bi-Centennial Day Care
Provides a culturally enriched, safe learning environment to children of Six Nations membership; provides individual program plans for special needs children; acts as a training centre for students of local public schools, secondary schools and colleges.

Stoneridge Day Care
 
  • Provincially licensed, integrated service with Six Nations Council being the official license holder.
  • Program and routines have been established to reflect the requirements of the Day’s Nursery Act and our culture and heritage, which includes active and quiet, group and individual and developmentally appropriate to all areas of child.
  • Children will be given the opportunity to participate in daily programs to stimulate curiosity, encourages self-help, culture, decision making and problem solving and the desire to learn.
  • To provide individual programs for children with special needs.
  • To work with community agencies to provide care / support / enrichment for children who may be at risk.
  • To act as a training centre for high schools and public schools to encourage students into the field of ECE.

Private Home Day Care
 
  • A licensed program in a home atmosphere
  • Provides care for children ages infants to -10 years of age
  • Offers a warm, stimulating home atmosphere
  • Follows the Day Nurseries Act Guidelines
  • Monitored by the Private Home Day Care Visitor
 
OUR PROGRAM IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NURTURING CARING PEOPLE TO CARE FOR CHILDREN IN THER HOMES. 
 
How to become a Caregiver:
  • Home visit is completed by Private Home Day Care Visitor
  • Fire inspection completed by the Six Nations Fire Department
  • A criminal reference check is required
  • A medical form completed
  • Immunizations records of pets up to date
  • Standard first aid certificates is required
 
How to enroll children into the program:
 
  • Child must be a Six Nations Band Member
  • Register child as according to the Six Nations Child Care Services enrolment process
 
Resource Drop-In Centre
 
Resource Drop-In Centre is located at 18 Stoneridge Circle in Ohsweken. The Resource Centre is a family based agency that offers many various programs for people of all ages. Some of the programs we are currently running through the year are:
 
The Resource Centre is a Program offered by the Six Nations Council for families that would like a safe and fun place to play at with their children. We offer a nutritious snack and a fun creative each day. We have drop in times Monday mornings, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the morning and in the afternoon and Fridays in the morning for families to participate in our Program.
 
Although our main focus is children 0-6 years, we do at many times throughout the year offer adult workshops, and adult skill based activities for parents.
 
Breakfast Program-Every Monday from 7:30-9:30 am during the school year and 8:00-10:00 am during the summer months.
 
Supper-Every Tuesday night from 5:00-7:30 pm. Sign up by Friday the week before is required so that Staff is able to purchase enough food available for the participants. Parents come out to help prepare the meal and then sit down to eat with the other participants.
 
Dad’s Program-An evening program offered for Dad’s to come out and meet other Dad’s, a safe place to play with their children and share experiences in parenthood. Dad’s or male role models only please.
 
Sister’s Circle- A place and time for women to share with other women their life skills, and life experiences. A place for women to take time for themselves away from home stressors. Women only (no children please).
 
We offer a Preschool Program one afternoon a week to help prepare children for school. The Preschool Program is geared to children ages 3-5. The skills we focus on will offer support in all developmental areas of the child.
 
We offer various trips throughout the year for parents and children with transportation available. Sign up for trips is the parent’s responsibility.
 
Language Preschool Program is geared to children, and parents that want their child to be exposed to native languages or that are entering into an emersion school. This Program is offered three half days a week. The children are given oral and auditory exposure and experience in language, culture and traditions. This program is partially funded by Community Trust.
 
Correctional Services
 
Adult Native Supervision Program
 
The Native Supervision Program Provides probation, provincial parole and conditional sentence monitoring and supervision to status First Nations people, both male and female, living at Six Nations, New Credit First Nations, Brantford and surrounding areas. Participants have been through the provincial court system or been in front of the Ontario Parole & Earned Release Board. Supervision includes laying failure to comply charges, following Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, procedures and standards and the writing of court ordered reports, including pre-sentence reports and reviews. In relation to parole, pre-parole investigations are completed and warrants are issued for the violations of parole conditions.
 
Community Service Order Program
 
Community Service Order Program Provides monitoring status First Nations, living at Six Nations, New Credit, Brantford and surrounding areas, who have been sentenced to complete community service hours by the provincial courts. This includes the completion of assessments for suitability as ordered by the court or as requested by legal counsel.
 
Youth Supervision Program
 
The Six Nations Grand River Correctional Services (S.N.G.R.C.S.), acts as a link between the Ministry of Children and Youth Services-Youth Justice Services (MCYS-YJS), the Native youth client, the Courts and the Native community.
 
S.N.G.R.C.S. provides a broad range of services to assist in the supervision and rehabilitation of the Native youth client in a manner that is non-threatening and consistent with their cultural background, values and aspirations.
 
S.N.G.R.C.S. also makes referrals to bring the Native youth client in contact with the appropriate agencies and services that will be utilized to assist them, i.e. Reintegration Program. This also gives the Native youth client an opportunity to work in the community and to re-establish relationships and trust.
 
Each Native youth client referred to S.N.G.R.C.S. will be interviewed to complete an intake and Risk/Needs assessment, to establish their needs and level of supervision. More time is allocated to deal appropriately with high-risk supervision cases as determined by the Risk/Needs assessments.
 
Native youth clients that are referred S.N.G.R.C.S. are referred to appropriate agencies according to their personal beliefs as they relate to their cultural background. When necessary, traditional Elders are utilized for ongoing support.

Alternatives to Custody Re-Integration
 
The Re-Integration Program will assist Youth on Probation to successfully re-integrate back into the community by providing knowledge and skills needed to transition the youth back into community in an effort to reduce recidivism.
 
Goal: Is to reduce recidivism of incarceration of Six Nations Youth ages 16-17 years of age by providing knowledge and skills that lead to opportunities for change.
 
Objectives: To enhance knowledge, skills and assistance in areas of: Employment seeking, education and life skills by one to one mentoring and case planning, facilitate applications to appropriate agencies to re-enforce mentoring and case plan on an as needed basis.
