Sudbury Operations

May 20, 2020

If you look around your home, you’ll see nickel everywhere. It’s a key component in our cars, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, kitchen appliances, and pots and pans.
Vale is proud to mine and produce nickel in Canada. The sites we operate have been serving Canadians and the people around world for more than 100 years, and, going forward, the future for nickel looks bright.

Sudbury is one of Vale's largest and longest-operating mining locations, rich in nickel ore and beautiful lakes and wilderness. Our Sudbury Operations have been in operation for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Our products include nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum group metals, gold and silver.

Community Reports

Operating our business in locations across Canada (Ontario, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador) and Wales (Clydach, Swansea) is an honour. To that end, we at Vale pledge to continually strive for the best possible future for our people, our families and our communities.

Emergency Preparedness and Response to a Hazardous Material Release Alert

A hazardous material release alert will be issued by Vale to the City of Greater Sudbury’s 911 Call Centre when an emergency has the potential
of adversely affecting the public. These events are very rare due to the operating safeguards in place. However, the risk does exist and it is important to know how to respond if an alert is issued.

Clean AER Project

Vale has completed its CAD $1 billion Clean AER (Atmospheric Emissions Reduction) Project. The project, which began construction in 2012, has reduced SO2 emissions from Vale's Smelter in Copper Cliff by 85% and metals particulate emissions by 40% from previous levels. Also, given the importance of climate change, the project will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Smelter by 40%.
These emission reductions reflect how far we have come both as a company and a community in terms of environmental stewardship and regreening our local landscape. In fact, the Clean AER Project has reduced emissions so significantly that our iconic Superstack will no longer be required and construction of two smaller and more efficient stacks is underway. The steel liners of those news tacks will be installed in 2019, allowing for the Superstack to be decommissioned in 2020.
The Clean AER project includes the installation of new converters in the Smelter, a new Wet Gas Cleaning Plant and a new Secondary Baghouse and Fan building.
