Sustainability

Oct 16, 2013
We are committed to being good stewards of the environment, having socially responsible business operations and suppliers, and focusing on the safety and prosperity of our people, our business partners and the communities in which we operate. At John Crane, we organize our sustainability efforts into four areas: people, product, planet and prosperity.

People

We encourage our employees to make a difference. Our team’s mission — empowering all employees to be leaders in environment, health and safety — has resulted in significant environmental impact reductions across the company. From “flipping the switch” initiatives to educational programs, our employees work together to identify energy reduction opportunities both big and small.

Product

Used in mission-critical operations and challenging environments all over the world, John Crane products help customers protect the environment through improved reliability and performance. They also meet or exceed all emissions standards and can help reduce fugitive emissions from vital applications.

Planet

John Crane is continuously focused on finding ways to use fewer natural resources. We help limit greenhouse gas emissions by partnering with utility providers to ensure the energy we consume is replaced in the market by renewable resources such as wind and solar energy. We’re also always working to reduce the amount of energy our factories consume and the volume of waste we produce.

Over a three-year period*, we reduced greenhouse gas emissions
Absolute reduction = 26%
Indexed to revenue = 42%
Goal = 10%

We also divert the waste we generate into recycling opportunities, directly reducing landfill use. Our diversion rates continue to improve year over year:
• FY2013: 79%
• FY2012: 72%
• FY2011: 64%

Packaging reduction efforts have helped achieve waste reduction goals by switching to take-back packages, eliminating packaging material that cannot be recycled or re-used, and increasing the use of repurposed materials for packaging. Our manufacturing facility in Germany has already achieved 100 percent reuse of received packaging materials and 100 percent reuse of recycled paper and cardboard for packaging product.

Prosperity

Our employees are committed to donating their time and giving back to their communities. We support countless charities, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Toys for Tots, United Way, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Cancer Society, Easter Seals and local community enrichment programs all over the world.

We also participate in a number of educational programs around the world by sharing real-life experiences with engineering students at local universities. In the Czech Republic, our engineering teams have partnered with an engineering high school to provide educational opportunities and support the school’s engineering drawing and modeling competitions.
