TBM Tunneling
What is TBM Tunneling?
Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) excavate underground tunnels using a circular cross section (cutter head) to cut through and grind rock at the front of the machine which is then conveyed to the construction site at the rear of the machine. TBMs are able to grind through almost any type of rock.
Frontier-Kemper has constructed more than 70 tunnels across North America using hard-rock and soft-ground Tunnel Boring Machines, Road Headers, Shields, and other methods.
Why use TBMs?
TBMs limit disturbance to surrounding areas and produce a relatively smooth tunnel wall (reducing cost of tunnel lining).
