KGHM will help educate miners and geologists

Aug 6, 2020

A dual education contract was concluded between KGHM Polska Miedź and the Jan Wyżykowski University. The cooperation will concern engineering studies in the field of Mining and Geology in three specializations: Techniques for the exploitation of deposits, Mining machines and devices and Exploration and recognition of deposits.

- Many of our employees are graduates or students of the Jan Wyżykowski University. Dual education and cooperation between KGHM and the university are a good combination of knowledge and experience. For graduates it is a career opportunity, for the Company - potential employees with expert preparation. It is our employees, specialists in their areas, who build the company's capital - said Radosław Stach, vice president of the management board of KGHM .

The contract with the Jan Wyżykowski University provides, inter alia, co-financing of studies by KGHM and the possibility of internships for students from the Mining and Geology faculty in the company's branches. Students who are employees of KGHM will have the opportunity to qualify their professional work for apprenticeships.

The best students will be able to count on the scholarship program, and KGHM as a Patron at the end of the academic year may additionally award a one-time scholarship for special achievements in the amount of PLN 3,000 dedicated to one student of the University by name.

Additionally, a Curriculum Committee will be established, composed of representatives of KGHM and the University, which will deal with, inter alia, adapting curricula to the needs of the copper industry and analyzing student internship programs.

- The task of the Curriculum Committee will be to verify the core curricula of all specializations in mining and geology. The dual education contract also stipulates that our experienced employees may be lecturers at the university. Therefore, if there is a need to strengthen the scientific staff, the university can count on us - explains Magdalena Wróbel, General Director for Human Resource Management at KGHM

Dual studies is a modern form of education in line with the trends of effective education in Western European countries. It combines traditional academic studies with professional practice in a company. Combining theoretical knowledge with practical aspects shortens the period of professional adaptation and preparation of students for full-time work immediately after graduation. Cooperation with the Jan Wyżykowski University is the first initiative of this type by a copper company at the higher education level. Among students of vocational and technical schools, KGHM runs the "Competent in the mining and metallurgical industry" program.
