Alex Bateman
2019 Winner

Alex is currently pursuing a Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering degree at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. This past summer, she worked in the engineering department as a Soil Technician at Mount Milligan Mine where she was responsible for the quality control of dam construction. She has complementary skills in GIS, Economics, Mathematics and Forestry which render her uniquely suited for a career in mining. Alex worked for 3 years as an employment training program supervisor with first nations youth in northern British Columbia, and hopes she can implement some of her learnings in the industry going forward. Outside of school, Alex is an avid backcountry and resort skier, and spends as many weekends as possible out in the mountains.

Caitlin Fischer
2019 Winner

Caitlin Fischer is a fourth-year Geological Engineering student at Queen’s University with a strong interest in the field of rock mechanics. Beyond her coursework, Caitlin has pursued knowledge in rock mechanics through her 2019 summer employment with Golder’s Mine Stability West team in Vancouver. As an extremely driven student with a strong work ethic, Caitlin held the highest GPA in Geological Engineering at Queen’s in the last academic year while also being a member of Varsity Track and Field, a teaching assistant for first-year Geological Engineering, and an enthusiastic participant in intramurals. She looks forward to further studying rock mechanics after completion of her undergraduate degree, and to making an impact in industry.
