Derek Leung
2019 Winner

Derek Leung spends his time collecting some stones (mineralogy) while throwing other stones (curling). Derek recently completed his BSc Hons in Earth Sciences at Laurentian University and is currently a Masters by Research (MScR) candidate in Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh. His project aims to document the damage evolution of curling stones using synchrotron microtomography, image analysis, and petrophysical testing of pristine and damaged curling stones. During his undergraduate studies, Derek gained valuable industry and field experience through summer student positions at Glencore Sudbury INO and the Metal Earth research project, while conducting research on a new mineral species. Minerals are the constituents of rocks and the containers of elements; therefore, Derek is passionate in applying mineralogy to enhance our knowledge of geological processes and develop tools for mineral exploration. Outside of academics and athletics, Derek’s interests include 3D printing, designing pop-up books, and creative necktie knotting.

Cara Rockwood
2019 Winner

Cara Rockwood is a science student at Queen’s University with a keen interest in the mining industry. During her 16-month internship with IAMGOLD Corporation, Cara had the chance to do field work in remote locations such as Suriname and Northern Ontario. Cara is excited to expand her education in Earth and Environmental Science to incorporate law as it relates to the mining industry, and looks forward to a meaningful career.
