The power of partnerships

Jul 16, 2020
Over the last decade, Weir Minerals and Oyu Tolgoi have built an enduring partnership based on close collaboration and our mutual commitment to safety and technical excellence.

When we first started working with the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia, “we had to drive 15 hours through the desert following a GPS line because the roads weren’t gazetted yet”, says Campbell Stewart.

The Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine is the largest in Mongolia and since it began production in 2013, has consistently achieved one of the highest annual copper outputs in the world.

“Weir Minerals has been involved with Oyu Tolgoi since the very beginning, supporting construction and commissioning of the plant, and since then we’ve been involved in the ongoing operation,” says Ryan Hilton, Director Aftermarket and Original Equipment Asia, Weir Minerals.

“We very much work as a partnership. We work with their teams, we work within their teams. Everything we do, we do collaboratively. And we’re happy to be here for every step of that journey.”

Since the beginning, Weir Minerals has been proud to work with Oyu Tolgoi to support its operations, collaborating with the mine’s engineers and maintenance technicians to provide and service a variety of essential mining equipment, including Warman® slurry pumps, Cavex® hydrocyclones and Linatex® rubber products including hose and sheet rubber. The team is also responsible for highly customised Linatex® moulded products and equipment linings.

“We opened a Weir Minerals facility in Ulaanbaatar, our first service centre in North Asia, to support Oyu Tolgoi. We have staff based on site pretty much permanently and we have daily interaction with their teams to ensure everything’s being run and maintained as efficiently as possible,” says Campbell Stewart, Managing Director, South East and North Asia, Weir Minerals.

It’s this close relationship which allowed Weir Minerals to suggest trialling Linatex® premium rubber as a replacement for hard metal liner panels in a ball mill feed chute which was experiencing unpredictable wear and required regular replacement.

A Linatex® premium rubber seat was trialled and achieved a wear life of seven months, prompting a complete replacement of the chute’smetal lining with Linatex® premium rubber bolt in panels and moulded components. This configuration achieved a wear life three years without requiring any maintenance, and is a testament the expertise and trust that underpins the relationship between Weir Minerals and Oyu Tolgoi.

“Our very close collaboration and engagement, and our understanding of each other is the base of the great relationship between Oyu Tolgoi and Weir Minerals. When you work closely together as a professional team, it’s much easier to understand one another,” says Ganbold Malkuuz, Manager Concentrator Technical Services, Oyu Tolgoi Mine Mongolia.

“Weir Minerals has been very professional from day one, and we’ve worked on many, many improvements together,” says Ankhbayar Enkhsaikhan, Maintenance Manager, Oyu Tolgoi. “In terms of improving safety, production efficiency and reducing costs, their idea of success and our idea of success are the same.”
