UNB Earth Sciences Outreach

Mar 5, 2014
All the faculty and many of the graduate students in the Department are involved in outreach; a program intended to increase awareness of Earth Sciences in the broader community. This program exists in collaboration with organizations such as Science East, the Atlantic Geoscience Society and professional organizations, like APEGNB (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist NB). Outreach is aimed at schools – both teachers and students – and members of the general public and covers topics of general interest related to the Earth Sciences: climate change, environmental issues, earthquakes, natural disasters, evolution, addressed by public lectures, school presentations, or visits to the facilities here at UNB. Outreach also aims to recruit students into university Geology programs by explaining the value of an Earth Sciences education, its relevance to society at large, and the career opportunities available. Again, this is done through school visits and through workshops and seminars organized at UNB.

Activities over the last few years have included: Earth Science workshops (seminars, demonstrations and a field excursion) for science teachers at all grades in the NB school system; geophysics demonstrations to junior high school students; mineral, rock and fossil demonstrations to classes from grade 3, 4 and 5; ‘geology in society’ demonstrations for school students and the general public; public lectures on the ‘Asian Tsunami’ (also a fund raiser for disaster relief); meteorite identification sessions with the public in Fredericton (with Science East) and other centres in NB.
