Underground Training

Jul 10, 2020

We are setting the global standard of excellence in training our future mine workers to be productive, confident, and safe.
NORCAT is the only non-profit skilled labour training and development organization in the world that has an operating mine, the NORCAT Underground Centre, dedicated to providing integrated, hands-on, and practical training programs for both new and existing miners.

The mine provides our clients with a range of experiential training programs that are not available anywhere else in the world. It serves as the perfect location for our four-week Common Core Training program and a range of specialty customized programs, including our Diamond Driller Common Core program and our operator training programs.

NEW - Surface and Underground Diamond Drilling Common Core (#770200 & #770150)

The Surface and Underground Diamond Driller Assistant Common Core Program was developed by NORCAT in compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MLTSD) standards. Upon successful completion of this program, each trainee will obtain accreditation and will be registered with the MLTSD for Surface and Underground Diamond Driller Assistant (#770200 and #770150).

This five-week (200 hours) program combines both theory and practical hands-on, experiential learning in an operating mine environment. Trainees will learn to operate various pieces of equipment and the safety requirements and government guidelines that you must understand to successfully complete the program.

#770225 - Basic Underground Hard Rock Mine Service Types Common Core

Service Type Common Core is required to be completed before an employee can perform any underground work. This level of safety training has proven useful to individuals who wish to secure employment with mining service contractors.

Upon successful completion of the program, plus WHMIS training or proof of WHMIS training, NORCAT will provide the trainee with a NORCAT card plus all documentation of the Service Type common core training. NORCAT does not register the Service Type Common Core.

#770010 - Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core

The Underground Hard Rock Miner program incorporates 2 days of theory, including information from the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it pertains to the Common Core modules, as well as an in-depth practical session for the remaining 18 working days of the program (4 weeks total). In the practical sessions, all aspects of each module are reviewed and practiced. Every module of the training will be completed to the trainee’s personal satisfaction and to the satisfaction of the instructor to ensure the complete working knowledge and skill required for every module.

This comprehensive training program complies with the standards set out by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MLTSD). Each successful graduate of the program will be registered with the MLTSD under Program #770010 Underground Hard Rock Miner.
