We Are Serious About Safety

Sep 23, 2013
Safety is our first priority, both the starting point and foundation for all aspects of our global business operations. Safe transport and storage of products, safe operational practices and safe working conditions enable us to protect our employees, customers, suppliers and the environment.

Operating a world-leading chemical distribution company requires a dedicated commitment to safety from every member of our team. Univar is proud of its safety record and we continue to place daily emphasis on our company-wide Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) policy so that safety remains paramount for everyone.

Univar employs several methods for incorporating safety into our day-to-day operations. First, we adhere to all laws, regulations and standards that govern our operations throughout the world. We constantly seek to improve our processes, and sharpen our recognition, evaluation and control of hazards. Second, we train and re-train our people to make safety a priority as they carry out their roles and responsibilities.

Responsible Care® is the chemical industry’s global initiative in which companies work together, through their national associations, to continuously improve their SHE performance.

Univar adheres to the guiding principles of Responsible Care, which are:
• Adherence to legal requirements
• Management of risk
• Maintenance of policies and documentation
• Provision of information
• Training
• Emergency response
• Commitment to ongoing improvements
• Community interaction

In North America, Univar is a member of the Canadian Association of Chemical Distributors and the National Association of Chemical Distributors; both require strict adherence to responsible distribution codes and practices. Additionally, we are member of the American Chemistry Council.

In Europe, Univar is a member of the European Association of Chemical Distributors and has taken the Responsible Care® Guiding Principles a step further with the introduction, in 2006, of U+, a pioneering internal site management system based upon stringent SHE procedures and goals. U+ goes far beyond the legal requirements, and since its launch, Univar’s Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) in the EMEA has decreased by more than 60%, giving Univar a significant lower LTIR rate than the chemical distribution industry average in the region.
