Sonami on mining royalty project: "Private mining in Chile would decrease a lot"

May 10, 2021

The president of the union, Diego Hernández, affirmed that there would be "a good number of mines that would not be economically possible, that is, that could not continue."

The president of the National Mining Society ( Sonami ), Diego Hernández , stated that the mining royalty project , which is being debated in Congress , would mean a decrease in private mining and a "good number" of mines could not continue.

"The only company that is not affected by taxes and royalties, naturally that is Codelco , which is the state company, so more than 'mining would end', private mining would decrease a lot in Chile,
because today we have many companies, many mines, that have relatively high costs ”, he began by affirming in ADN Hoy .

"I can show that with the bill as it is, there are a good number of mines in Chile that would not be economically possible, that is, they could not continue, " said the president of Sonami.

It should be noted that this Monday the price of copper set a new historical record , surpassing its own mark on Friday. This day had a variation of 3.51% and reached US $ 4.865 per pound.
